1968 Ferrari 312F Monoposto

  • Chassis Number: 009
This is one of three 312 F1's built in 1968. This car won the 1968 French Grand Prix, piloted by Jack Ickx. He then went on to place third in the British Grand Prix and fourth in the Dutch Grand Prix. In addition, it was driven by Chris Amon in four Grand Prix events and by Derek Bell and Pedro Rodriguez in one event each (Derek Bell drove number 009 in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on September 8th of 1968).

The car and its incredible flat 12 engine were the brainchild of Mauro Forghieri. Turned loose by his boss, Forghieri started with a clean sheet of paper and created the 'Flat 12' to reduce the center of gravity of the car. That engine displaced 2,989 cubic centimeters, was capable of 11,000 RPM's and produced nearly 500 horsepower. Forghieeri also concentrated the car's mass between the wheels allowing for the quickest possible directional response.

The 312 was one of the dominant forces in Grand Prix at the end of the 1960s and well into the 1970s.
