Alfa Romeo introduced the 6C 2500 Series in 1937, using a bored out version of the 2300 engine and chassis with wheelbase of 270, 300, and 325 cm. The Super Sport (SS) had the highest rate of tune using three carburetors and the shortest chassis. Only 66 were produced from 1939 to 1943.
Following WWII, an additional 383 cars were built from 1947 to 1951. Other than minor refinements, the post-war cars were mechanically unchanged. The coachbuilders, primarily Touring and Pinin Farina, provided a newer look for the cars. Weighing 1400 kg, the 105 horsepower Pinin Farina Cabriolet is capable of 165 kph.
By the mid-1950's Alfa Romeo had almost fully shifted its focus from expensive, low production coachbuilt cars such as the 6C 2500 to more affordable mass produced vehicles.
The 6C 2500 SS displayed here had been in the Detroit area since the 1950's, in the ownership of a single family, it was recently acquired by the present owners. The car has been driven very sparingly, so the current mileage of 19,000 kms is believed to be original. Cosmetic restoration of the paint, wire wheels, top and carpets was undertaken in the early 90's, but the car retains a patina reflective of the care it has been given during its lifetime.
