The Grand Sport was produced between 1929 and 1934 in six different series, each of which improved over the previous car. These cars were very competitive in rallies and racing during their period. This model, a sixth series car, was one of 44 built and was designed by Vittorio Jano, one of Italy's greatest engineers. The engine is a 1750cc straight-6 cylinder model with twin overhead camshafts and a supercharger. With it, the car is capable of top speed of 90 mph. The custom coachwork on this car is by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan; it was designed by Bianchi Anderloni, who applied aerodynamic principles to make the car fast, light, and beautiful. The car's first owner was Cesar Felog of Lake Como, Italy.

The Alfa Romeo Company began as ‘Anonima Lombardo Fabbrica Automobili' at Milan in 1910. In 1915, industrialist Nicola Romeo took over, and cars built after World War I were given the Alfa Romeo name. In 1920, Enzo Ferrari became a test engineer and driver, later forming his own Scuderia to race Alfa Romeo cars. The early mechanical genius at Alfa Romeo was engineer Vittorio Jano who left Fiat in 1923 and would become responsible for Alfa Romeo's successful line of potent power-plants for years to come. He developed the 150cc single ohc six, followed by DOHC versions in both 1500 and 1750cc displacement. The most potent of the 1750 series was the supercharged Gran Sport.

This 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 17500 Gran Sport wears coachwork by Carrozzeria C. Castagna & Co of Milan, Italy. The company was formed by Carlo Castagna in 1906. He was a skilled and gifted businessman who had a talented son, designer Ercole. Ercole's younger brother, Emilio, became chief designer in the 1920s. His specialty was close-coupled cabriolets which he built for such legendary marques as Isotta-Fraschini, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Bianchi, Lancia, Mercedes-Benz, and OM.

This vehicle, chassis number 121215037, was once owned by Major Kyle Mouey in England. In 1975 it was exported to Australia and completely restored by The Automobilists of Melbourne in 1986. It was given the traditional Alfa Romeo red color at that time; prior, it had been painted cream with black highlights. With the rebuilt engine, the car was entered in two events of the Targa Tasmania. The third owner, Mrs. Diana Gaze, continued its racing pedigree and did so with much success.

Since 1997, the car has been a show piece in a Brazilian collection. Recently, it has been given new interior carpets and leather upholstery.

In 2008, the car was offered for sale at the 'Quail Lodge, A Sale of Exceptional Motorcars and Automobilia' presented by Bonhams Auction. It was estimated to sell for $800,000 - $1,000,000. At the conclusion of the auction, the car had not sold.

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 was produced in six series from 1929 to 1933. A total of 2579 were built, of which about 360 were supercharged GS models. Most 6C 1750s were sold as rolling chassis and bodied by coachbuilders. Zagato was the mast of the Superleggera method of placing aluminum body panels over a small-gauge steel framework. The 6C 1750s gained an enviable reputation for speed and reliability and were entered in many races. Alfa Romeo's most famous victory came in the 1930 Mille Miglia when 1750s took the first four places, catapulting the Italian sports car into the history books.

This Sixth Series Alfa Romeo was given elegant coachwork by Joseph Figoni's coachwork facility in Paris. This vehicle was one of the final 6C 1750s produced and one of Figoni's first teardrop designed. After the work was completed, it was painted two-tone black and white and shown at the 1933 Paris Motor Show on the Alfa Romeo display. It was later shown at the Monte Carlo, Nice, and Deauville Concours d'Elegance where it received several awards.

A short time later, the coupe body was replaced with a lightweight open body in preparation for racing. The car was driven by Guy Don and Jean Desvignes at LeMans in 1935 where it finished sixth overall and first in class. After the racing career concluded, its original body was re-installed.

It is believed that the cars next owner, South African George Elkin, acquired the car in the late 1930s. In the late 1960s, ownership changed again and remained in South Africa.

The current owner acquired the car in 2009. At the time, the car was painted two-tone blue and was in 'restored' condition. The restoration work was deemed 'poor' and a new restoration soon began. A complete body-off restoration by RX Autoworks of Vancouver brought this car back to its original glory.

The car made its restoration debut at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este and later at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

In 1929 the 6C 1750 was created as a replacement for the aging 6C 1500. The name, 6C 1750, was a combination of the six-cylinder engine and the 1752 cc engine displacement. The 1750 continued the strong racing legacy Alfa Romeo had established with their P2 Grand Prix car and the 1500. The design for the Sport editions were simply yet sophisticated. They used a light frame coupled with a small inline-six cylinder supercharged engine capable of producing nearly 100 horsepower.

The 1750 was created in 1929 and produced until 1933, during this time nearly 2500 examples were created. There were six series each achieving a higher level of sophistication over the prior series. As was the case with many manufacturers at the time, Alfa Romeo supplied the rolling chassis and commissioned coachbuilders such as Zagato, Touring, Stablimenti Farina, Castagna, and James Young to finish the body. The result was a wide range of specifications and creativity.

The design was handled by Vittorio Jano, an individual Enzo Ferrari, an employee of Alfa Romeo, had been able to lure from Fiat. Jano had been tasked with designing the 6C 1500 which had been powered by a six-cylinder engine. He was then tasked with designing the 6C 1750 which was debuted at the 1929 Rome Motorshow. It shared many similarities with its predecessor; the biggest difference being an enlarged engine. Because of the larger engine it was capable of being outfitted with larger, heavier bodies.

The first version of the 1750 was the Turismo. The second version was the Sport which sat atop a shorter wheelbase and was given an improved engine. The most powerful and competitive versions of the 1750 was the Super Sport or Gran Sport. In this form they were often campaigned by the factory and privateers in a plethora of sporting events. They were equipped with supercharged engines and sat atop a short wheelbase. Most of the 360 examples received coachwork courtesy of Zagato, mainly because of the lightweight design. Only 44 examples of the sixth series Gran Sport were produced. The Gran Sport was successfully campaigned at events like the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, and Tourist Trophy where it emerged victorious.

In 1931 the 8C 2300 replaced the Gran Sport. The 1750 Gran Sport is one of the finest sporting examples of its time. The 1750 continued Alfa Romeo's reputation for fun-to-drive vehicles that were competitive and durable.
