1958 Mercedes-Benz 180 Series Sedan

Mercedes-Benz completed the transition into the modern age in 1953, with the Model 180. The integral body construction, now firmly welded to the chassis to form a single unit, had become reality in the form of the three-box - or 'Ponton' - bodystyle. This all-enveloping body blended improved stability and safety with a much more contemporary look. Compared to the classic shape involving pronounced fenders, free-standing headlamps, running boards and a short rear overhang, the Ponton models offered a more incorporated body, as well as the very practical advantages of a more spacious passenger compartment, improved visibility, lower drag coefficient, less wind nose and a significantly larger trunk.

For all the modernity of its lines, the interior of the Ponton continued to reflect the intuitive functionality, ergonomic sensibilities and harmonious driver experience typical of all Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
