Henry Middlebrook Crane was an M.I.T.-trained engineer responsible for some of the most rapid motorboats and most expensive automobiles in America prior to WWI. The Model 3 came on the market in 1912 and at $8,000 for the chassis alone, the market was quite limited. Its 563.7cid in-line L-head six-cylinder engine was rated at 46hp, but actually produced 110hp! In total, less than 40 were built on a 136-inch wheelbase chassis, all with custom coachwork. In 1914, Simplex management purchased the Crane Motor Car Company.
Socialite Helen Hartley Jenkins of Madison Avenue, NYC, and 'The Terraces' of Norfolk, CT, originally owned this Crane Model 3 (Number 15) from 1914 to 1922. One of the wealthiest women in America, she originally paid $15,000 for the car. The seal Cove Museum of Maine acquired it in 1986.
