The Lotus Elite, also known as the Type 14, was designed as a GT car to compete against the successful Alfa Romeos, Abarths and Simcas of the period. Lotus produced just 1,015 Elites and approximately 800 examples of all types remain.
The Series II Elites had a revised rear suspension, upgraded brakes, twin carburetors, an auxiliary oil cooler, a close-ratio ZF gearbox, a long-range fuel tank and a more rugged, five main bearing crankshaft. Other changes included higher-quality coachwork constructed by Bristol Aircraft featuring an NACA duct on the bonnet and a distinctive silver-colored roof.
This example is a Series II Super 95 model built during the final year of production. The original owner is not known; the second owner acquired the Elite early and retained it until his passing. In 2004, the current caretaker purchased the car from the long-term owner's estate. Over the following next seven years, the car was given a ground-up restoration carried out by Essex Racing Services of Cumming, Georgia. The Coventry climax engine was meticulous rebuilt and dyno'ed by Nelson Engine Services. Since that time, the car has been driven less than 150 miles.
The car is finished in blue with a silver roof section. There is an external fuel-filler, painted wire wheels and Pirelli Cinturato tires. The interior is trimmed in black vinyl upholstery, highlighted by grey carpets and a correct wood-rimmed steering wheel.
The 1216cc single overhead cam Coventry Climax four-cylinder engine is fitted with 2 Weber Twin-Choke carburetors and offers 96 horsepower. There is a four-speed ZF manual gearbox and 4-wheel Girling disc brakes (inboard at the rear).
In 2012, the car was offered for sale at the Gooding & Company auction held in Amelia Island, Florida. It was estimated to sell for $100,000 - $130,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for $140,250 inclusive of buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2012
