The Lotus S3 Elan was introduced in September of 1965 and had a visible distinguishing feature having an extended trunk lid to the back of the rear deck. Unseen was the battery moving to the trunk. Early 'backbone chassis' Lotus Elans were originally made available either as 'free of purchase tax' do-it-yourself kits, or factory assembled with purchased tax - then equivalent of sales tax. There are dozens of contemporary customer reports of the d-i-y kit missing parts, undrilled holes, and mismatched components.
