The 1961 Lincoln Continental grew out of a Thunderbird design exercise by Elwood P. Engel of Ford in August 1958. Lincoln took over the Thunderbird project, and with only minor changes, the 1961 Lincoln Continental was born. Lincoln's success depended entirely upon this one model. With a shorter overall length than the previous 1960 model, the new Continental was immediately regarded as a benchmark of style and refinement. The simple, blade-like silhouette and understated elegance of the car challenged the world's idea of luxury, creating a lasting icon of automotive design. To reassure buyers that they were choosing the finest quality, Lincoln technicians performed a rigorous road test, and every car came with a two-year 24,000-mile warranty.
