This Dietrich body Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan epitomizes the true essence of a world-class luxury automobile.
This automobile is believed to have been sold new to Clara S. Peck at the Chicago Duesenberg showroom. Ms. Peck was the heiress to the Woolworth department store fortune and a lifelong breeder of thoroughbred horses. She was also known to be a collector of fine exotic automobiles and rare books.
This Model J is currently the only Dietrich body convertible sedan known to exist, as a sister car was destroyed many years ago. It truly represents the pinnacle of American luxury and performance at a time when nearly every man was struggling to survive.
Of course, Duesenberg was not immune to the financial struggles and worries of the 1930s. Sales fell far short of their 500 unit per year sales target. This would eventually lead to the failure of E.L. Cord's automotive conglomerate of Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg.
A total of just 481 Model J Duesenbergs were produced with various coach-built bodies over a period of nearly ten years, from 1928-1937. Today, the few surviving examples are among the most prized and coveted American automobiles ever produced.
