Fiat had acquired a 50% ownership position in Ferrari by the close of the 1960s. This new relationship and an infusion of capital allowed Enzo Ferrari to maintain his racing program, and to create and market a more affordable sports car. To combat popular sports cars such as the Porsche 911, a new mid-engine sports car was envisioned, powered by a smaller V-6 engine that could be shared with Fiat models. The V-6 was adapted by Lampredi from an earlier Ferrari racing engine championed by Ferrari's deceased son Alfredo 'Dino.'
At the 1964 Paris Motor Show, the new model was introduced as a Pininfarina concept, with the first production Dinos introduced in 1968. They wore a designed by Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti and were equipped with a 2.0-ltier DOHC V6 engine. In 1969, they were replaced with 2.4-liter engines fitted with three Weber downdraft carburetors backed by a 5-speed transaxlea integrated into the transversely mounted engine.
These later 246 Dinos had an all-steel body constructed by Scaglietti in either a GT (coupe) or targa-top GTS configuration. These mid-engine production cars had electronic ignition—the Dinoplex capacitive discharge system developed by Magnetti Marelli—and was the first production Ferrari to be fitted with a direct rack-and-pinion steering system, similar to those found on the company's racing cars.
This particular 1973 Ferrari 246 GTS is a U.S.-specification example with 23,475 miles on the odometer. It is finished in Azure Blue paint with a black interior. Options include air conditioning, Cromodora wheels, and power windows. It is a highly original example with the original books, tools and jack.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2019
