The Bugatti Type 57 was the successor to the Type 49, but the two shared very little except for the bore and stroke of its inline-eight-cylinder engine. Production began in 1934 and would continue through 1939 with steady revisions being applied along the way, including the adaptation of Lockheed hydraulic brakes later in its production. Beginning in 1937, an optional supercharger became available, and Type 57 models so-equipped were identified as a Type 57C. With the supercharger installed, the output rose to over 215 horsepower.
This particular Type 57C was a factory-supercharged model that wore a berline body by Gangloff. It was delivered through the Lyonnaise agent Monestier to one Balay. In 1949 it was owned by Pierre Noblet and subsequently by French collector-dealer Jean Louis DuMontant, who in 1958 fitted the present original Stelvio cabriolet body from another Type 57. The car's next owner was Dr. Milton Roth of California who would retain it for over the next four decades. Dr. Roth subsequently passed the Bugatti to Fred and Muriel Treat. While in their care, it was shown at an American Bugatti Club meeting in Mandeville Canyon on May 14th, 1961. Within two years, the car had entered the stewardship of Jack Bradley, then to Southern California Bugatti specialist, O.A. 'Bunny' Phillips, who completed a fresh restoration in black and ivory in 1967 and 1968.
Approximately two decades ago, the Bugatti was purchased from Charles Hascall of Vista, California by its current caretaker. Since then, it has remained secluded and out of the public eye. It currently wears a two-tone red and black paint scheme, with a red leather interior piped in black.By Daniel Vaughan | Dec 2022
