The first generation of the BMW M3, known as the E30, was built from March 1986 to June 1991. Most examples were given coupe body styles, with a 2-door convertible body style being built in limited volumes. An 'Evolution' (also called 'EVO1') model was released in 1987, and a total of 505 examples were built between March and May 1987. The styling was unchanged from the standard E30 M3, as was the power produced by the engine. The cylinder head (designated by an 'E' stamp) was revised to improve performance.
Even fewer examples of the Evolution 2 were built (between March and May 1998), reaching 501 units. Styling modifications included a deeper front spoiler with brake cooling ducts instead of fog lights and a rear spoiler with a new trailing flap. The thinner side and rear glass helped reduce the vehicle's weight. The M3's 'S14' dual-overhead-camshaft inline four-cylinder engine was given revised pistons, camshaft, and an increased compression ratio from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1. It used a more efficient air intake, revised engine management software, Bosch fuel injection, and a camshaft and intake plenum cover wearing BMW Motorsport tricolour scheme. Output rose to approximately 220 horsepower at 6750 RPM and 181 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 RPM. A lightened flywheel was also added to the preexisting close-ratio five-speed transmission (with 'dogleg' first gear).
This particular home-market M3 Evolution II is number 119. It was sold new to its first owner in June 1988 via BMW Niederlassung Bonn. It left the factory wearing a Macao Blue Metallic exterior with the Evolution II's exclusive silver 'M' cloth upholstery. Among the list of optional equipment bestowed upon this M3 were air conditioning, heated seats, rear headrests, a power sunroof, a green-tinted windshield, and the Evolution accessory package ('M' emblazoned dead pedal, door sills, and Evolution console placard).
This BMW spent the first three decades of its existence in Germany. In November 2017, the current caretaker had the car imported to Ohio. At the time, the car had 52,725 kilometers on its odometer. Currently, there are fewer than 57,050 kilometers on the odometer.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2024
