1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Coupe

  • Coachwork by Pininfarina
  • Chassis Number: 0491 SA
  • Engine Number: 0491 SA
Ferrari 410 Superamerica with chassis number 0491 SA was the 12th example built. Pinin Farina assigned it job number 15258 and it entered their workshop on May 10th of 1956. Later that fall, the finished product emerged, paint in gray with red leather upholstery. It was sold through Luigi Chinetti Motors to its first owner, H. Richard Dietrich of Philadelphia on October 17th of 1956. He took delivery of the car while vacationing in Europe.

After his fall vacation season in Europe, Mr. Dietrich hired the Intra Mar Shipping Corporation to transport 0491 SA to New York by boat. When it arrived in the United States, it was registered in Pennsylvania and saw very little use over the next three decades. After Mr. Dietrich's death in 1984, the car was sold by his son to Greg Garrison of Los Angeles. Between 1984 and 1986, the Superamerica was restored and finished in a dark green with a contrasting metallic silver roof.

It made its post-restoration debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August of 1986 where it was awarded the Hans Tanner Memorial Trophy.

The car remained with Mr. Garrison until 1999, when it was sold to the current caretaker. By this point in history, the car had been driven less than 12,000 km. from new. Even though it was in excellent condition, the new owner commissioned a comprehensive, show-quality restoration. It is current finished in Amaranto with butterscotch leather upholstery.

It made its second restoration debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August of 2008. Since then it was shown on one other occasion, at the 2009 Cavallino Classic in Florida where it was awarded both the Platinum Award and the Excellence Cup

This Ferrari retains its original engine (internal no. 13 GA), gearbox (37 PA), and differential (21 GA). It has four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes and a four-speed synchromesh manual gearbox. The 4949cc Tipo 126 single overhead camshaft v-12 engine has three Weber 42 DCZ 3 carburetors and produces 340 horsepower. In the front is an independent suspension setup with coil springs. In the back is a live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs.

The Ferrari 410 Superamerica was the successor to the 375 America. It was fitted with a 4.9-liter, Aurelio Lampredi-designed V12 engine with triple Weber carburetors, which was basically a detuned version of the engine in the Ferrari 375 Plus that won both Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana in 1954.

As the most expensive Ferrari available, the 410 Superamerica replaced the 375 America after only eleven examples had been made. Both cars belonged to Ferrari's flagship America series that offered the highest levels of sophistication, exclusivity and performance. Built as the ultimate grand tourer, each car was custom ordered with a unique body. This Superamerica (serial number 0491SA) is the 12th example in a series of 17 cars built in 1956 and the 12th of 16 Superamerica Coupes built by Pinin Farina. It was originally finished in gray with a red roof and red leather upholstery. The car has been driven less than 8,000 miles in its entire life, and it has been shown twice before at the Pebble Beach Concours, once in 1986 by Greg Garrison and once in 2008 by Lee Herrington. It was shown again in 2019. It was sold new to H. Richard Dietrich of Philadelphia whose company manufactured Luden's cough drops.
