2014 Volkswagen JettaHerndon, VA, - The Jetta remains Volkswagen's best-selling car, three years after the sixth-generation car was introduced to the Ú.S. market as a 2011 model. But Volkswagen never rests on success and is continuously striving to make its vehicles even better. The 2014 model Jetta is proof of this philosophy.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta
Únder hood, the 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine in the SE and SEL trim lines has been replaced by a new 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder engine, carrying the EA888 Gen 3 designation. The engine makes 170 horsepower (the same as the 2.5) and 184 pound-feet of torque (7 lb-ft more, delivered lower in the rev range). Equipped with an automatic transmission, it also has an EPA estimated fuel economy figure of 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, an improvement of 5 mpg on the highway over the outgoing 2.5-liter engine. The new engine runs on regular unleaded gasoline.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta VW's engineers also made some other significant mechanical improvements for 2014. On the cars fitted with the available 1.8T engine, the hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering has been replaced by an electric-assist system, in line with the TDI and GLI models. All 2014 Jetta models now have a multilink rear suspension, replacing the previous torsion-beam layout on the 2.0L S, 2.5L SE, 2.5L SEL, and TDI Clean Diesel models.

Inside, the Media Device Interface (MDI) cable has been relocated from the glovebox to the center console, while SEL, TDI with Premium, and TDI with Premium and Navigation trims receive a rearview camera. The SE with Connectivity and Sunroof adds Keyless access with push-button start. A navigation system and automatic transmission are now standard on the SEL

Finally, Volkswagen will introduce its VW Car-Net™ connected services this fall on the Jetta lineup. VW Car-Net—which has a six-month no-charge trial period—offers a wealth of security and convenience features, including Automatic Crash Notification, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle location assistance. In addition, VW Car-Net adds: remote vehicle access; boundary and speed alerts; a vehicle health report; and an enhanced POI service on vehicles equipped with a navigation system. Most of the features can be administered through a handy smartphone app. (iPhone® only, Android® coming soon.)

Exterior
Marketing experts call it 'class-up appeal'. It's the offering of more, for less. Which is why, when Volkswagen completely redesigned the Jetta, it crafted a bigger car, with a longer wheelbase and 2.9 inches added to the overall length. The increased dimensions allowed designers to incorporate clear, precise lines and muscular surfaces to impart a timeless elegance, giving the impression that this is a car from a higher class.

At the front, the coupe-like incline of the windscreen and the consistent use of horizontal lines define the Jetta's design. The horizontal blades in the grille, together with the blades in the lower intake, are designed to make the Jetta appear wider and more dynamic.

To break-up the tall body sides of the 2014Jetta, Volkswagen brand head of design Klaus Bischoff and his team created a pronounced character line—a 'tornado' line. This cuts through the large side surfaces, running as a sharp crease from the rearmost edge of the headlight, beneath the windows, softening-out as it reaches the rear lights.

To give visual weight to the lower part of the Jetta and impart a sense of the car being 'planted' to the road, the base of the doors is eased outwards. The pronounced wheelarches also add visual width and weight to the car.

2014 Volkswagen Jetta The GLI features a more dynamic look than the regular Jetta, courtesy of its honeycomb grille, a deeper front spoiler, and GTI-style vertical foglights and red-painted brake calipers. At the rear, there are smoked taillights and dual exhaust tips. On the Autobahn with Navigation trim, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLS add to the sporty exterior styling.

The Jetta GLI offers striking 10-spoke 17-inch alloys as the standard wheel, with a wide-spoke 18-inch design for the GLI Autobahn model. A stunning 18-inch 'Motorsport Black' rim is available as an option on all GLI models.

Interior
A key benefit of the Jetta's extended wheelbase—it stretches an incredible 104.4 inches—is a truly spacious interior, with impressive rear-seat legroom of 38.1 inches. Long legs can rejoice. The gently arcing roofline also means more than ample headroom of 37.1 inches for rear-seat passengers. And stretch-out legroom in the back isn't achieved by a cramped front seat either. Being tailored for an American audience, there is no shortage of legroom and headroom up front.

Just open any of the Jetta's wide-angled doors and the quality of materials, the fit and finish, and the clean, simple, refined elegance of the cabin is clearly visible. And in true German tradition, the layout of the fascia, the positioning of the switches and controls, and the clarity of the oversized, round instruments is designed to be ergonomic and intuitive.

Trunk space also borders on the cavernous. The Jetta offers a class-leading 15.5 cubic feet of usable trunk space, and can be increased significantly by folding forward the 60/40-split rear seatback. The rear seatback is also offered with a pass-through to accommodate longer items, like skis.

Even the entry-level Jetta models come extremely well-equipped. The Jetta 2.0L S, with a starting MSRP of $16,720, has standard air conditioning, one-touch auto up/down power windows, power locks with keyless entry, aux-in for the radio/CD player, and power heated exterior mirrors.

Move up to the SE and additional standard features include: heatable front seats; cruise control; standard V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces; an adjustable center armrest with storage compartment; a six-speaker sound system; and a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® adapter.

Premium features that are available on Jetta include: a six-way power driver's seat; a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel; a soft-touch dashboard; two-tone V-Tex leatherette sport seats; the RNS 315 navigation system; the acclaimed Fender® Premium Audio System; Keyless access with push-button start; VW Car-Net™ connected services; Bluetooth® connectivity; and a rearview camera. Exterior enhancements include a chrome radiator grille and chrome window trim.

On the Jetta GLI, the interior stays true to its performance roots. Side-bolstered sport bucket seats feature bright-red stitching; there's matching red stitching on the flat-bottom steering wheel, shift knob gaiter, and parking brake surround; and the car also has aluminum-alloy-look pedals and trim pieces.

Fender® Premium Audio System: The remarkable Fender Premium Audio System comes standard with the 2014 Jetta SEL; the TDI® Clean Diesel with Premium and the TDI with Premium and Navigation models; and the GLI Autobahn and GLI Autobahn with Navigation models.

Developed through collaboration between Fender and Panasonic®, the system cranks out 400 watts of power played through nine speakers, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer, to bring the raw emotion of a live music performance to the driving experience.

And the same cool, chromed Fender logo that has graced the guitar 'amps' of some of the world's greatest rock legends is featured on the A-pillar tweeters on the Jetta's Fender sound system.

Engines and Transmission

Volkswagen pioneered the use of small displacement, highly efficient turbocharged and direct-injection engines in the Ú.S., starting with the EA113 engine in the 2006 Jetta GLI and GTI. Since then, Volkswagen's EA888 four-cylinder has set the benchmark for small-displacement turbocharged engines, beginning with the 2009 CC.

The Jetta 1.8T SE and SEL models feature a new EA888 Gen 3 turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine that is made in Silao, Mexico. This 1.8-liter engine produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque—the same power, but seven pound-feet more torque, delivered lower in the engine speed range than the 2.5-liter five-cylinder powerplant. The EPA estimated fuel economy rating is 26 mpg city and 36 mpg highway when equipped with the five-speed manual transmission, and 25 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway with the six-speed automatic.

The EA888 Gen 3 engine family is designed to be lighter and more fuel efficient than the Gen 2 units. Engine weight has been reduced by eight pounds, to 290 pounds overall. Among the improvements on this engine are: a thinwall crankcase casting; exhaust headers that are integrated into the cylinder head; smaller diameter main bearings; roller bearings for the twin balancer shafts; and a crankshaft that has four counterweights instead of eight.

The latest version of the EA888 TSI engine, in 2.0-liter form, also powers the Jetta GLI models. This award-winning double-overhead cam, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine produces 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. While it gives the GLI exhilarating performance, it is also highly efficient with its EPA-estimated economy of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg on the highway when equipped with Volkswagen's fast-shifting DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

Among the other engine offerings, the 2.0-liter four that powers the Jetta 2.0L S features two valves per cylinder and sequential multi-point fuel injection to deliver 115 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It's offered with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) With the five-speed, the EPA fuel economy is estimated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

A favorite engine choice among Jetta buyers is the highly efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel engine that produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. With either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the DSG automatic, the Jetta TDI can, according to EPA estimates, average 30 mpg in the city and an impressive 42 mpg on the highway. That enables the Jetta TDI to cover up to 609 miles on a single tank.

Suspension
All Jetta models are fitted with a strut-type front suspension with coil springs, telescopic dampers, and an anti-roll bar. For 2014, the torsion-beam rear suspension that was fitted to the 2.0L S, 2.5L, and TDI models has been replaced by a sophisticated multilink independent arrangement that features three transverse and one longitudinal link per wheel. This enables the longitudinal and transverse dynamics to be precisely configured almost independently of each other. The result is more agile, responsive and precise handling. All Jetta models have an anti-roll bar as part of the rear suspension.

The GLI has a sport suspension that rides 0.6 inches lower than other Jetta models and also features, as standard, the impressive XDS® Cross Differential System.

Safety and Security
Safety in the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta starts with an extraordinarily stiff and rigid bodyshell constructed using seamless laser welding and high-strength steel in key areas. The front of the car is also crash-optimized, featuring impact-absorbing elements integrated into the front structure which compress under impact.

Also standard on all Jetta models are driver and front passenger front and side thorax airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags front and rear. There is also a standard suite of advanced electronic safety aids, such as Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA).

Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) reacts instantly in a collision when the airbags are deployed. It unlocks the doors, turns off the fuel pump, and even activates the car's hazard lights.

Scheduled Maintenance
And as with all Volkswagen models, the 2014 Jetta is covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. Scheduled maintenance is covered for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.
