1915 Packard 1-35 news, pictures, and information

The new twin six was a vehicle that would place the company in the luxury field for the next two decades and set the tone of Packard's over-all thinking for many years. The cars were keyed directly to the upper scale sales bracket. Two series were offered the, 1-25 with nine models and the 1-35 with 13 styles. The designations were based on wheelbase not horsepower. The 2 door passenger coupe cost was $2,700 and the 3 passenger coupe was $3,700. One of the Twin Six's best testimonials came from the home of Rolls Royce. 'For twenty years the Packard car had held the reputation of being in America what the Rolls Royce is in England.' The chassis of the new Twin-six bears no resemblance to earlier Packard's it is channel section pressed steel 6 inches deep. The front axles are I-beam with roller bearings and rear axles are beam tubular steel, semi-floating.

Packard introduced the Twin Six engine in May, 1915 for the 1916 model year. The engine was a 424 cubic-inch V12 offering 85 horsepower. The cars rode on a 1350inch wheelbase chassis with 37-inch wheels. Approximately 4,140 were produced and only 17 are known to remain today.

This example was purchased by a Mr. R. Giroux from the Earle C. Anthony dealership in Los Angeles, California as an early 'pre-production' car. He owned the car for over five decades and used it to travel to his silver mine in Carson City, NV. It is the only Brewster body 'California Top' known to exist on a Packard chassis. The uniquely designed body features windows that fold into doors providing an open pillar-less body. The body is built using 4 types of wood. The interior could be closed off in very little time during inclement weather. The body alone cost about $9,000. The car includes an on-board air compressor and an air pressurized fuel system.
