In the early 1900's the company was known as Mercedes, Daimler Moteren Gesellschaft had not yet merged with Benz to form the company we know today. That merger would not take place until June 1926. This early automobile, among others, helped establish a reputation for Mercedes for its production of vehicles that had incredible power and speed.
Mercedes introduced a six-cylinder engine in 1906 that was capable of producing 65 hp. It became the power-plant for the 37/65 hp. A short time later, a sportier version was introduced producing five extra horsepower, now rated at 70. The six-cylinder engine was crated by using two blocks comprised of 3-cylinders each. Each block had its own camshaft and dual spark plugs for each cylinder. The engine was massive, nearly ten liters. This increased the weight of the engine to over 3000 pounds and top speed was achieved at 55 mph. Production of the 37/70 continued until 1910.
The Mercedes 37/70 carried a hefty price tag and as such, was most often found in the garages of the wealth.
