2006 Dodge Dakota news, pictures, and information

When we say that the Dakota comes with the most available torque, and the most available towing capability†, we are not pulling your leg. We're pulling more weight than any other truck in the segment†. We made the 2006 big in every respect, including capability.

With your choice of two available class-exclusive V8 engines and a standard V6, Dakota delivers horsepower and torque by the truckload. The new 4.7-liter high-output Magnum® V8 engine kicks out 260 horsepower and best-in-class 310 lb-ft of torque. The 4.7-liter Magnum V8 provides 230 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. And the standard 3.7-liter Magnum V6 engine has 210 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque.

Dakota's fully boxed hydroformed frame provides the stiffness, strength, and durability to handle up to a 1,750-pound payload in the largest and longest standard cargo bed in its class. It also helps deliver over 7,100 pounds of maximum towing capability when properly equipped. That's over 3,000 pounds more than some of Dakota's nearest competitors.

When you have the most available torque in your class, you'd better be able to put it to good use. All Dakota 4x4 models feature part-time 4LOCK and 4LO four-wheel-drive modes that can be easily engaged by a switch on the instrument panel. For maximum traction, choose the available class-exclusive* four-position full-time four-wheel-drive transfer case that provides all-wheel-drive traction all the time.

Suspension
The Dakota uses an independent front coil-over shock suspension on both 4x2 and 4x4 models for improved ride over the rough stuff and increased handling control in the turns. And the standard rear stabilizer bar reduces body roll under loaded conditions. So the next time you take a ride in someone's luxury sedan, give them a compliment and tell them it rides like a Dakota.

When we set out to create to the biggest, strongest, most capable Dakota ever, we didn't skimp on the most important feature of all: safety. That's why the 2006 Dodge Dakota Club Cab® has received a five-star rating in front and side-impact crash tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).*
Some of the safety and security features built into the 2006 Dakota include:

- Advanced multistage driver and front-passenger air bags with Occupant Classification System (OCS)†
- Available supplemental side-curtain air bags†
- Class-exclusive replaceable hydroformed front frame structure and octagonal rail tips
- Large front disc brakes and standard rear-wheel antilock brakes
- Available Security Group with integrated vehicle alarm system and Sentry Key®
- Child seat tether anchors (LATCH) and child-protection rear door locks

Dakota is built from the ground up and the frame rails forward to provide added protection to all passengers. In the event of a front-impact collision, specially designed octagonal front frame rail tips collapse rearward to absorb impact energy. And they're easily replaceable, minimizing the need for time-consuming, costly repairs to the front of the frame rails.

You've heard of stopping on a dime. How about stopping on a wet dime? The Dakota features large front disc brakes and standard rear-wheel or available four-wheel antilock brakes that help prevent wheel lockup and improve steering control in extreme braking or slippery conditions.

Air bags, air bags, and more air bags. The Dakota features standard advanced multistage driver and front-passenger air bags with an Occupant Classification System† (OCS) that adjusts the deployment force of the passenger-side front air bag based on passenger weight. Supplemental side-curtain air bags are available on both Quad Cab® and Club Cab® body styles to provide increased side-impact protection to front and rear outboard occupants in the event of a collision.

Our safety engineers didn't rest their heads when it came to protecting yours. The rear head restraints on all Dakota models have a foam-padded steel rod structure with ladder-style design. The result? Increased protection in the event of a collision, and outstanding rearward visibility to help avoid one in the first place.
