Professional Grade powertrains

2006 Yukon and Yukon XL have a wide array of powertrain choices. The Yukon 's standard engine is the Vortec 4800 4.8L V-8, which is rated at 285 horsepower (213 kw) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm). The Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 is standard on the Yukon XL and optional on the Yukon . The Vortec 5300 is rated at 295 horsepower (220 kw) and 335 lb.-ft. of torque (463 Nm). The Yukon XL 2500 Series are equipped wîth the standard Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8, which is rated at 335 horsepower (250 kw) and 375 ft.-lb. of torque (508 Nm). Optional on the Yukon XL 2500 series is the Vortec 8100 8.1L V-8, which is rated at 325 horsepower (242 kw) and 447 lb-ft. of trailer-towing torque (597 Nm).

The Flex-Fuel Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 is capable of running on either 87-octane regular unleaded gasoline or a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol. New programming in the engine control module recognizes the amount of ethanol in the fuel system, thus eliminating the need for a physical fuel sensor.

Three versions of the Hydra-Matic 4-speed electronic automatic transmission are matched wîth the Vortec engines: 4L60-E, 4L80-E and 4L85-E. All three transmissions have a tow/haul mode. Standard and available rear axle ratios include 3.23, 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10.

Ride and handling

Yukon 's front suspension is an independent torsion bar design wîth a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension uses a multi-link coil spring design on half-ton models and a dual-stage multi-leaf spring design on 3/4-ton Yukons . An Autoride, bi-state variable shock dampening and rear air-assisted load-leveling suspension package is available. An off-road suspension package (Z71) is available on 4WD Yukon models. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and a locking, heavy-duty rear differential are standard. Yukon XL 2500 series can tow up to 12,000 pounds (5,443 kg) when properly equipped. The base towing capacity is 7,700 pounds (3,493 kg).

StabiliTrak is standard on half-ton Yukon and Yukon XL models. StabiliTrak helps the driver maintain control in sudden maneuvers, particularly in low traction conditions, in emergency lane changes and during avoidance maneuvers. StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal.

StabiliTrak works by transferring torque across the rear axle on two-wheel-drive Yukons to whichever rear wheel has the most traction. On 4WD models, the torque goes wherever traction is best on all four corners of the truck. Four-wheel drive Yukon models benefit from StabiliTrak in 4AÚTO. StabiliTrak can be partially turned off in 4AÚTO and on two-wheel drive models, providing partial yaw stability and traction control, plus full ABS control. Only the engine management is deactivated, allowing drivers to freely spin the vehicle's wheels when in deep snow, sand or gravel. In four-wheel drive models, selecting 4LO turns off StabiliTrak, creating a low-gear ratio wîth extra torque for better hill climbing, towing a boat up a launch or controlling vehicle speed for descents down steep declines.

Safe and secure

In addition to StabiliTrak , Yukon and Yukon XL have a full complement of standard safety and security features. Dual-stage frontal driver and right front passenger air bags are standard. Dual-stage air bags reduce the risk of air bag-induced injury by sensing the crash severity. Depending on the conditions the air bags may or may not deploy. The primary stage alone will deploy in most frontal impacts requiring supplemental protection beyond safety belts. Safety belts remain the primary and most effective form of occupant protection. In severe frontal collisions the secondary air bag stage will deploy.

Side-impact air bags for the driver and front outboard passenger are available.

Yukon and Yukon XL use GM's Passenger Sensing System (PSS) to turn the front passenger air bag on or off. The system turns off the front passenger air bag if a small occupant is sensed. GM strongly recommends that children should be in appropriate child safety seats in the second or third row of the vehicle. Never install a rear-facing infant seat in front of an active air bag. GM also recommends that all children 12 and under ride in a rear seat whenever possible.

GM's LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child-seat attachment system provides a secure means of anchoring child safety seats to the vehicle seat structure. Denali models are equipped wîth GM's PASSlock II theft deterrent system. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard. The brake systems feature Hydroboost, which provides additional power assistance for braking under specific conditions.

OnStar-equipped Yukon and Yukon XL models feature OnStar dual-mode (analog-digital) equipment. OnStar's digital equipment also includes enhanced hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada . Úsing the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Hands-Free Calling that allows drivers to make and receive voice-activated phone calls using an externally mounted antenna for greater reception.

Interior comfort and versatility

Spaciousness is a key attribute of GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models. They were designed to haul people and cargo and can accommodate as many nine people. The first row will accommodate 2 or 3, the second row will also carry 2 or 3, and the optional third row will hold 3 passengers. Cargo capacity behind the third-row seat is 16.3 cubic feet (461 L) in the Yukon and 45.7 cubic feet (1,294 L) in the Yukon XL. The Yukon XL has a wheelbase that is 14 inches longer and 20 inches more total length. Second-row seats can be flipped forward for more cargo room and the third-row seats are removable to create a flat load surface.

Yukon interiors are very well equipped. Available options allow owners to customize Yukons to their specific needs. Seating surfaces are available in plush Custom Cloth or luxurious leather. A vinyl third-row split bench seat is also available. The standard front seat is a 40/20/40 split bench, but bucket seats wîth a center console are available. The standard folding second-row seat features a 60/40-split bench and captain's chairs are available.

Several sound systems are available including XM Satellite Radio. A rear-seat DVD entertainment system is available. A touch-screen navigation radio is also available. OnStar is standard, including a one-year subscription to the Safe & Sound service.
