2006 VIBE IS IN TUNE WITH CROSSOVER CUSTOMERS
Pontiac Vibe is a fun-to-drive crossover vehicle that offers a blend of performance, style and substance that's drawing youthful customers into Pontiac showrooms in increasing numbers. It is ideally suited to active lifestyles, and available all-wheel drive makes the Vibe a great choice for taking people and equipment wherever the action may be.Refinements of comfort and convenience packages highlight the 2006 Pontiac Vibe, after styling updates and other enhancements were made for the '05 model year. The Vibe's contemporary styling cues exhibit a strong family resemblance to the exciting new 2006 Pontiac Solstice roadster. These familial traits leave no doubt that the Vibe is part of the Pontiac performance team.
The '06 Vibe has the following new features and changes:
- Stealth Gray Metallic added to the list of exterior color choices (replaces Lava)
- Available sound system wîth ETR AM/FM stereo CD player and MP3 playback
- Available Sport Package includes 16-inch cast aluminum wheels, Premium Monotone Appearance Package, and --- ETR AM/FM stereo wîth six-disc CD changer
- Available Premium Package wîth leather seating surfaces and leather-wrapped §teering wheel rim
- Available Security Package includes OnStar, four-wheel antilock brakes and tire pressure monitoring system (base model only)
- Preferred Package replaces the Power Group Value Package and includes remote keyless entry, power programmable door locks, power windows, cruise control, and inside rearview, manual day/night mirror
- Sun and Sound Package replaces the Moon and Tunes Value Package and includes power sunroof and Monsoon sound system wîth seven speakers and integrated subwoofer
- Appearance Package replaces Sport Package and includes two painted front and rear fascia extensions, side rocker extensions and two spoilers (roof and mid-gate mounted). Appearance Package is available in Platinum, Abyss or Salsa
Performance and style
Bold, contemporary styling along wîth Pontiac 's traditional wide, muscular stance enhances Vibe's form and function. An integrated roof rack adds to the distinctive wedge appearance. Short body overhangs coupled wîth standard 16-inch wheels and available 17-inch wheels provide style while optimizing vehicle stability and interior space.
The 2006 Vibe has strong powertrains to match its athletic looks. A dual-overhead cam 1.8-liter I-4 engine in base models produces 130 horsepower (97 kw) and 125 lb.-ft. of torque (170 Nm); it is rated at 123 horsepower (92 kw) and 118 lb.-ft. of torque (161 Nm). The engine uses variable valve timing to optimize fuel economy and performance. The fuel-efficient engine meets 2007 Últra-Low Emission Vehicle (ÚLEV II) standards. The high-performance Vibe GT has a dual-overhead-cam 1.8-liter I-4 that produces 170 horsepower (127 kw) and 127 lb.-ft. of torque (175 Nm). The GT engine uses variable valve timing to increase intake and exhaust valve lift at high engine speeds. This boosts power while helping to improve fuel economy. The Vibe GT is capable of 0-60 mph times of slightly more than eight seconds. A six-speed manual is the only transmission available wîth the Vibe GT.
Suspension and brakes
The 2006 Vibe's total performance package is much more than great engines. Outstanding handling and a comfortable ride are integral, wîth a MacPherson strut front suspension used on all model. There are, however, two different rear suspensions.
Front-wheel drive and GT models use a twist-beam rear suspension design that provides ample wheel travel for an excellent combination of quiet riding comfort and stable handling. All-wheel drive Vibe models use a double-wishbone independent rear suspension that complements the sure-footed AWD system. Available StabiliTrak works in conjunction wîth the traction control and ABS systems. StabiliTrak, GM's advanced electronic stability control system, assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal.
Base FWD and AWD Vibes use vented front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The GT has four-wheel-disc brakes. All-season P205/55R16 tires are available wîth 16-inch steel and 16-inch alloy wheels. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels use P215/50R17 tires. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard on Vibe GT and AWD models, and is available on the base model.
Interior comfort and convenience
Vibe's contemporary interior provides a combination of comfort and convenience, wîth standard cloth upholstery or available leather seating surfaces. Seating capacity is for five people, two in front and three in the rear. A folding front passenger seat, along wîth folding second-row seats, allows a wide variety of passenger/cargo combinations wîth room for items up to 8 feet long.
The Vibe also is wired for modern living. The front console has a standard 115-volt power outlet wîth a wall-type plug. Laptop computers, cell phone chargers, air compressors and countless other electrical products can be used without adapters. Passengers can even send and check wireless e-mail from the Vibe. There is also a 12-volt power outlet on the instrument panel.
Excellent audio/information systems are a must for youthful customers and the Vibe offers a host of systems including XM Satellite Radio, a new optional ETR AM/FM stereo wîth CD player and MP3 playback, and a seven-speaker Monsoon system wîth integrated subwoofer that is part of the Sun and Sound Package. XM Satellite Radio provides entertainment and information including advanced traffic and weather for selected major metropolitan areas. Available OnStar Gen 6 provides the ultimate in driving peace of mind wîth hands-free capability and digital and analog coverage.
OnStar-equipped Vibe models feature OnStar dual-mode (analog-digital) equipment. OnStar's digital equipment also includes enhanced hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada . Úsing the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Hands-Free Calling that allows drivers to make and receive voice-activated phone calls using an externally mounted antenna for greater reception.
Advanced safety features
Vibe offers many active and passive safety features. Excellent handling and braking systems are examples of active safety features. All-wheel drive is available and an anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard on GT and AWD models and available on the base Vibe.
Passive safety systems include safety belts and air bags. Consistent safety belt use is the primary and most effective form of occupant protection. All Vibe seating positions have three-point safety belts. Front outboard retractors have built-in load limiters to reduce peak chest loads by allowing a controlled amount of belt give during 'ride down' crash conditions. Front inboard safety belt buckles move wîth the seat during position adjustments.
Dual-stage frontal air bags provide supplemental protection for front seat passengers. The air bag system's control unit determines whether the severity of a crash warrants air bag deployment and if just the primary stage or the primary and secondary stages are necessary. This smart system helps reduce the risk of air bag-induced injuries. Front safety belt pretensioners deploy at the same time as the frontal air bags to take up slack in the safety belt webbing. Pretensioners minimize occupant movement during a crash.
Vibes are equipped wîth LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system anchors for child safety seats. Two lower anchors and a top tether anchor secure the child seat to the vehicle seat structure for proper installation of compatible child safety seats.
Available head curtain side air bags provide additional protection. They unfold from the roof rail between the A-pillar and side window header. The side air bags deploy in an angle toward the window to help provide protection for front and rear outboard passengers.
The basic structure of the Vibe features a large safety cage and crumple zones. Frame and body panels are constructed on high-strength steel designed to absorb crash energy and resist passenger compartment intrusion.
