1972 Italdesign Boomerang news, pictures, and information

The public was first shown the Maserati Boomerang Concept in 1971 when it was on display at the Turin Motor Show. The display was non-functional and it would take a year before the workable prototype would be shown. In 1972 at the Geneva Salon, the Boomerang with its 4.7 liter V8 engine was shown in working condition to the public. Many of the mechanical components were borrowed from Maserati's production vehicles. The design had been courtesy of Italdesign.

The Boomerang served as a show car, visiting many autoshows until 1974. It had toured in Paris, London, Barcelona, Turin, and Geneva Auto Shows where it was praised for its bold design. After it had served its purpose it was sold to a Maserati enthusiast. It was purchased by its second owner in 1980 who performed a restoration. It was shown at the 1990 Bagatelle Concours in Paris where Giorgetto Giugiaro was serving as a judge. During the show, Giugiaro hand-signed the rear panel.

The car was offered for sale at the 2005 Christie's International Motor Cars Sale where the vehicle was auctioned for 1,000,000.
