The 308 GT4 was bodied by Bertone and built as a replacement for the 206/246 Dino. The design was controversial, often criticized for its 2+2 seating coupled with the mid-engine layout. This configuration required a longer wheelbase, decreasing the small and sporty appeal of the prior Ferrari's. Performance increased over its predecessor, mostly due to the transversely mounted V8 engine.
A two-seater version was introduced at the 1975 Paris Motorshow. This version was simply known as the 308 GTB, the Dino name was dropped. Pininfarina was tasked with creating the body and followed closely in the design of the 308 GT4 BB.
The eight-cylinder engine produced over 250 horsepower and was outfitted with a wishbone suspension in the front and rear. Fiberglass was used throughout the vehicle resulting in rigidity and low weight but increased the overall cost. The cost was enough to force Ferrari into switching to all-steel in 1977. The chassis was tubular, a design that was familiar to Ferrari.
By this point in history, Ferrari had withdrawn from sports car racing, all except for Formula One. Though this was the case, Ferrari still found ways to support privateers. Their cars were a popular choice because the technology and knowledge gained throughout the years at the race track easily found their way into the road-going Ferraris.
A series of 308 GTB's were modified by Ferrari Specialist Michelotto for Group 4 rally competition. Three of the 308's were known as the 308 IMSA or 308 GTB/M. To maximize weight distribution, the engine was mounted longitudinally. A standard five-speed manual gearbox sent power to the rear wheels. Top speed was achieved at around 170 mph. These were raced sparingly with mild success.
