1932 Maserati 4CS 1100 news, pictures, and information

One of the a few pre-war Maseratis to have been originally bodied as a full road-going sports car. It was later converted to a 1.5 liter Monoposto to become 'The Fastest Car To Have Raced Anywhere In The World In 1943'. After the war, it won its class at Prescott Hillclimb in England.

Discovered in the U.S. in the 70's by Maserati specialist Dan Margolis, it was returned to England and finally restored by Tony Merrick to its original 1932 Milan Auto Show Brianza-bodied form - down to the color.
The Maserati 4CS has an impressive history at the Mille Miglia including class victories in 1932, and 1934-1936. The first appearance for the little, but powerful racer, was at the 1931 Mille Miglia. Five additional models followed, with one being displayed at the 1932 Milan Motor show adorned in Brianza coachwork. These were quickly followed by a wide array of 4CS models that included single seater racers and Grand Prix cars. The original engine was a 1100 cc unit with twin overhead camshafts and dry sump lubrication. With light-weight construction and a roots-type supercharger, the 4CS were popular with many privateers and customers. A 4CS 1500 (1500 cc engine) derivative with a fixed-head design was a further experimentation with larger engine capacities. Later, designs including the 4CS 2000 and 2500 with revised engine blocks were constructed.

The name 4CS had been chosen because of its 'cilindi testa riportata (4CTR)' which represents the engines detachable cylinder head design.
