The Mitchell & Lewis Wagon Co. started out in the late 1890's. By 1901, the firm was producing the Mitchell motorcycle. In 1903, the Mitchell Motor Car Co. built its first automobile. That was the same year as Henry Ford's first car. The company produced cars until 1923.
This Mitchell is the Special Light Six. It is a six-passenger car and is one of two known to exist. The finish is Imperial Mitchell Dark Blue. Some of the special features include an on/off sliding disc switch on the dash indicating when the engine is running and the generator is charging. The headlights flip up to illuminate the engine at night if in need of a trouble light. This Mitchell was literally found in a Michigan barn in 1987 and the restoration was completed in 2002.
Mitchell made their own engines and blocks. The L head six-cylinder engine has 248.8 cu. inches and produces 45 horsepower. The bore and stroke is 4' x 5 1/2'. The wheel base is 128' and the tires are 36 x 4'. The cooling system is a combination of a circulating water pump and a thermo syphoning system. The rear axle ratio is 4.49 to 1, allowing you to pull through difficult road conditions. The original price for this car was $1,585.
