1961 Silnes Dirt Champ Car news, pictures, and information

This car was built by Wally Meskowski and Joe Silnes and was known as the Silnes Chassis. It was built for Mr. Fred Sclavi of Charleston, WV, who owned Bell Lines Trucking. He owned the car until June of 1963. While under his ownership, the car was driven by A.J. Shepherd, Roger McLuskey, Bobby Grim and Johnny Rutherford. Rutherford took his first championship ride (in the Hoosier 100) at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on September 15, 1962, by starting 18th and finishing 15th.
Sometime after the Hoosier 100 of April 1963, the car was old to George Walther who owned the Dayton Foundry of Dayton, OH, and ran his cars as the Dayton Steel Wheel Specials. Mr. Walther campaigned the car through 1969 with such drivers as Johnny Rutherford, Parnelli Jones, Bud Tinglestad, Lloyd Ruby, Arnie Knepper, Joe Leonard, Bill Foster, George Snider and Bill Puterbaugh.
One of George Walter's sons, Salt Walther, failed to to qualify the car for what turned to be its last race at the Indiana Fairgrounds on September 7, 1968. The car sat idle in the Walther race shop in Dayton until the current owner purchased the car in 2002. The car now runs under the thomas Malloy Collection.
