2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

On April 12, 2006, the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class will celebrate its world premiere at the New York International Automobile Show. Like its predecessors, the new E-Class will feature innovations that are without comparison in its segment worldwide. 'Through its role as a technological trendsetter, the new generation of the E-Class is again setting benchmarks,' says Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group, responsible for Sales and Marketing. 'With its new engines, pioneering safety technology and cutting-edge lighting systems, the vehicle is the safest, cleanest, most powerful and most reliable E-Class of all time.'

When the new-generation E-Class hits showrooms in Europe in early June and in the U.S. a few weeks later, customers will be able to choose from 29 model variants — 16 sedans and 13 station wagons. As a result, Mercedes-Benz offers a larger and more diverse range of models in this market segment than any of its competitors. The dynamism, power and performance of the new-generation E-Class are particularly evident in the car's new design. New features for the vehicle interior include attractive new color combinations, a new four-spoke steering wheel and a new control unit for the automatic climate control system, which is standard equipment.

E-Class: Safest vehicle in its class

Thanks to its pioneering innovations, the E-Class continues to be the safest vehicle in its segment. 'One of the key features of the new-generation E-Class is its outstanding safety level,' says Maier. 'It is clearly the safest vehicle in the upper-range segment.'

Standard equipment in the sedan and the station wagon models will now include the anticipatory PRE-SAFE® system, which automatically activates safety measures for the driver and front passenger if an accident becomes imminent. The award-winning system makes the most effective use of the seatbelt and airbag in the event of a collision. No other upper-range car in the world offers a comparable safety system. Also unique are the standard NECK-PRO headrests, which provide sensor-controlled head support for the driver and front passenger during rear-end collisions. Mercedes-Benz has also enhanced occupant safety by equipping the new-generation E-Class with blinking brake lights that activate to prevent rear-end collisions during emergency braking maneuvers.

Intelligent Light System: World premiere of a new headlight system

The new-generation E-Class is the world's first automobile to be equipped with adaptive headlights that optimally adjust to driving and weather conditions, thus substantially improving driving safety. The new headlight technology — known as the Intelligent Light System — is available as an option for the sedan and station wagon and features five different light functions. The new country mode extends the motorist's field of vision, ensuring faster recognition of obstacles or other road users. The system's highway mode creates a uniform cone of light that automatically illuminates the width of the entire road at speeds of 90 km/h and higher. Compared to the previous version, the new system extends the driver's field of vision by about 50 meters in the center of the cone. An improved fog light system also makes it easer to drive in fog, and the active cornering light function has been enhanced as well. The Intelligent Light System also features a cornering light that improves safety at intersections and when taking curves at low speeds.

New diesel and gasoline engines: A big boost in power and agility

Six of the ten engines available for the new-generation E-Class are either new or have been enhanced. The four-cylinder-diesel engines for the E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI in particular have been optimized down to the last detail in order to further improve output, torque and smooth running characteristics.

Mercedes-Benz has been offering the E 320 CDI in the U.S. since 2004, making it the first diesel-powered car in the upper-range segment of the U.S. market. Beginning in autumn 2006, Mercedes-Benz will also be offering the first BLUETEC series-production vehicle in the U.S. The automobile is equipped with the cleanest diesel engine in the world, which considerably reduces nitrogen oxide emissions in particular. At the same time, the E 320 BLUETEC consumes 20 to 40 percent less fuel than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is also preparing to launch the first BLUETEC-equipped passenger cars in Europe by 2008.

The gasoline engines for the E-Class were also enhanced, and the engineers at Mercedes focused particularly on the four- and eight-cylinder drive systems. At the top of the E-Class' engine range will be the all-new 5.5-liter V8 from the S Class, with an output of 388 hp. The model lineup will be expanded by the E 63 AMG, whose 514 hp engine makes it the most powerful E-Class ever built. Agility and driving pleasure will be greatly enhanced not only by the new and improved engines, but also by the DIRECT CONTROL package with more responsive steering and a retuned chassis.

The 60-year success story of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class: 10 million E-Class vehicles delivered to customers worldwide

For more than 60 years, Mercedes-Benz' upper-range model has epitomized the brand's signature attributes, including safety, comfort, innovation, fuel economy and quality. Since 1946, about ten million customers from all over the world have opted for Mercedes-Benz' upper-range model. And the seventh generation of this successful model, the current E Class, has also been a great success: One million sedans and station wagons have been sold worldwide since this model was launched on the market in 2002. As a result, more E-Class vehicles were sold during this time period than any other competing premium-class automobile. In 2005, the E-Class defended its leading market position in both its home market of Germany and in the rest of Western Europe, despite having to contend with substantially younger competitors in the premium segment.

E 200 NGT: environmentally friendly solution with bi-fuel drive

With CO2 emissions reduced by more than 20 percent and a more than 50 percent reduction in operating costs, the Mercedes-Benz E 200 NGT has been available since the spring of 2004. As well as making it one of the most cost-effective models in the Mercedes range, the 120-kW/163-hp four cylinder engine under the bonnet of the bi fuel E 200 NGT also makes it the most powerful natural-gas-driven saloon currently in production. Natural-gas-powered vehicles are a key element of DaimlerChrysler's overall concept for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and for safeguarding a sustainable form of mobility.
The E 200 NGT (Natural Gas Technology) was developed at the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center on the platform of the E 200 KOMPRESSOR. The four-cylinder powerplant has a power rating of 120 kW/163 hp and generates a peak torque of 240 Newton metres. Thanks to the elaborate solutions which have been used to integrate the additional technical components, power delivery, comfort, quality and safety have not been compromised in any way aboard the E 200 NGT.

The E 200 NGT with its bi-fuel petrol/natural-gas power unit complies with the same stringent EU 4 emissions limits met by the petrol-powered E 200 KOMPRESSOR. In natural-gas operating mode, emissions of carbon dioxide are cut by over 20 percent compared to petrol operation.

Operating mode can be switched conveniently at the touch of a button

The E 200 NGT can be run on either natural gas or premium unleaded petrol, with the driver being free to decide which of the two drive sources should be deployed. The buttons in the multifunction steering wheel and the central display in the instrument cluster can be used to switch between natural-gas and petrol operation as required. Ensuring a smooth, jolt-free switch between modes is the task of a special electronic control circuit which orchestrates the changeover for each cylinder individually. A gauge in the instrument cluster's central display keeps the driver informed of the current level of gas in the reservoirs. Once the supply of gas has been exhausted, the system automatically switches back to petrol operation, so smoothly that the change is imperceptible to the vehicle's occupants. As soon as the reservoirs are refuelled with natural gas, the journey is automatically resumed in the gas operating mode.

Specific modifications to the supercharged TWINPULSE engine

The supercharged TWINPULSE engine was modified by the addition of injector nozzles on the underside of the intake manifold. A pressure regulator with sensor and electromagnetic shut-off valve is fitted near the engine to regulate the supply of natural gas and maintain the required system pressure at a constant level. The reprogrammed engine electronics ensure seamless operation in both drive modes. The E 200 NGT distinguishes itself from comparable models, which often deliver poorer performance in natural-gas mode, by matching the sophisticated four cylinder power unit's exemplary power and torque characteristics even when running on natural gas. This makes the E 200 NGT the most powerful saloon with a bi-fuel drive unit currently in series production.

This environmentally friendly variant of the E-Class is available in Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland among other markets, and in a right hand drive version for Thailand and Singapore.

Comprehensive crash testing to ensure trademark Mercedes safety

The two fuel sources are stored in a petrol tank with a capacity of 65 litres and four gas reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 18 kilograms respectively. The reservoirs are located in the spare wheel well in the boot, and behind the rear bulkhead. A comprehensive programme of crash testing has been carried out to ensure the high standards of safety that Mercedes is renowned for. The leak tightness of the gas reservoirs was subject to particularly rigorous scrutiny - after all, the natural gas that is pumped into the reservoirs during refuelling is compressed to a pressure of 200 bar.

When its fuel reservoirs are fully replenished, the total range of the E 200 NGT - based on the NEDC fuel consumption figures - is around 1000 kilometres, of which just under 300 kilometres are covered with the natural-gas drive and the remaining 700 kilometres with conventional petrol power. The saloon may also be equipped with an 80-litre petrol tank as an option, extending the maximum range to nearly 1200 kilometres.

Large boot capacity and the same high payload

With the gas reservoirs fitted, the boot has a load capacity of 400 litres (measured in accordance with the VDA method). In practical terms, this means sufficient stowage space for two jumbo suitcases plus two smaller travel cases. The payload capacity of the saloon with its five-speed automatic transmission is 510 kilograms – virtually the same as in the E 200 KOMPRESSOR.

When seen from the outside, the E 200 NGT with bi-fuel drive looks just the same as any other series-production E-Class saloon. The only difference is that the fuel filler flap is somewhat larger, concealing as it does not only the familiar filler neck for the petrol tank but also a special filler connection for the natural gas, which has been purpose-designed to ensure safe and convenient refuelling.

Costs halved in natural-gas operating mode

Quite apart from the drastic cut in CO2 emissions, running the vehicle on natural gas also holds economic benefits. At the present time, a kilogram of natural gas costs between € 0.80 and € 0.90 in Germany, which translates into a cost of between € 0.54 and € 0.60 per litre when equated with the energy provided by petrol. This makes natural gas over 50% more cost-effective than premium unleaded petrol. Furthermore, a range of financial incentives - such as tax benefits and subsidies by the gas suppliers - is on offer in Germany to assist with the purchase of natural-gas-powered vehicles.

Natural gas represents a feasible alternative to petrol and diesel, both from an ecological and an economic point of view. The fact that it is a primary form of energy allows it to be used in its natural state without any conversion losses. Non-toxic and odourless, natural gas is made up primarily of methane (CH4), meaning that it contains a lower proportion of carbon than any other fossil fuel. Consequently, CO2 emissions are cut by over 20 per cent compared to petrol.

Network of natural-gas filling stations expanding all the time

Expansion of the filling station network in Germany is continuing apace. There are currently more than 730 filling stations in Germany with natural-gas pumps. Refuelling with natural gas is extremely straightforward and takes no longer than with traditional fuel types. Furthermore, no losses through evaporation take place and no unpleasant odours are produced during refuelling.

Natural gas is lighter than air. As a result, natural-gas-powered vehicles may be driven into multi-storey car parks and tunnels without any restrictions. Warning signs such as 'Entry prohibited for compressed-gas-driven motor vehicles' do not apply to vehicles run on natural gas.

Impeccable levels of comfort and safety, extensive standard specification

The driver and fellow occupants of a Mercedes-Benz E 200 NGT need not compromise on comfort or safety in any way. The standard specification of the NGT saloons is, apart from just a few exceptions, identical to that of the E 200 KOMPRESSOR model.
