This innovative little vehicle was one of the earliest automobile creations of the great James Ward Packard. The quality is remarkable and features a steering wheel in a time when most other marques were still using a tiller. This example is the fourth oldest Packard in existence.
In 1901 a race from New York to Buffalo was schedule to test reliability and speed of 89 entrants, five were Packards. The race was never finished due to cancellation after President McKinley was assassinated. At the time of cancellation, only four-one cars were still in the running including the five Packards.
This example came with a 183.8 cubic-inch engine capable of producing 12 horsepower. It's bodystyle is Runabout with removable dos-a-dos rear seat, sits atop a 76 inch wheelbase, and could be purchased from the factory for $1500.

The Model C of 1901 was an innovative automobile. It was the first to use a steering wheel and column on an American Car and the first H-pattern gear change.
This 1901 Packard Model C Dos-A-Dos Runabout was sent to Packard dealer H.B. Shattuck and Son in Boston in mid-1901. It is chassis number C-67 making it the thirteenth example produced in 1901. Currently, it is the fourth oldest Packard in existence and the oldest one still in private hands.
At some point in history it was owned by collector George H. Waterman Jr, who sold it to Ohio collector Duane Bohnstedt in the 1960s. He began a restoration on Christmas morning that would consume 18 months and include re-building a new body and wheels, plus nearly ever mechanical part.
In 1990, the car was sold to Carl J. Schmitt. It was shown at the 1990 Pebble Beach Concours where it was awarded a Third in Class in the Antique Class. It also presented the Charles A. Chayne Memorial Trophy for technological innovation. In 1991 and 1996 it was entered on two London-to-Brighton runs. Recently, it has been treated to a total re-restoration .
In 2008, this Dos-A-Dos Runabout was offered for sale at the Gooding & Company auction held in Pebble Beach. It was estimated to sell for $275,000 - $350,000 and was offered without reserve. The lot was sold for $214,500 including buyer's premium.

The 1901 Model C was one of James Ward Packard's earliest models of which just 81 examples were built. It was the first car to feature a steering wheel at a time when most automobiles still utilized a tiller. Power was from a 183 cubic-inch engine offering 12 horsepower and rode on a 76-inch wheelbase. It was also one fo the first cars to use the common 'H' shift pattern for the transmission. It sold new from the factory for $1,500.
The body on this car features one seat in the front for the driver and two center facing rear seats.
