1974 BMW 3.0 CS

The BMW E9 Coupe was introduced in 1968 in the form of the 2800 CS Coupe utilizing a 3.0-liter, M30 six-cylinder engine with twin carburetors and delivering 180 horsepower. The sleek and elegant coachwork by Karmann was designed by Wilhelm Hofmeister, with an airy cabin with slim windscreen pillars and a large glass area. Successor to the Neue Klasse coupes, the E9 would remain in production through 1975.

With a 103.3-inch wheelbase and an overall length of 183.5 inches, the E9 was longer than its predecessor so it could accommodate the straight-six engine. Rear brakes were initially drums, and it had the same rear axle as the 'Neue Klasse.'

In 1971, the 2800CS was replaced by the 3.0 CS, so named for its 2,986cc (3 liter) engine. With twin carburetors and 9.0:1 compression, the engine produced 180 horsepower at 6,000 RPM. With Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and 9.5:1 compression, the engine powering the 3.0 CSi (i for injection) produced 200 horsepower at 5,500 RPM.

The 1974 BMW 3.0CS Coupe came with a six-cylinder, single-overhead-cam, carbureted engine offering 170 SAE horsepower or a Bosch fuel injection unit offering 200 horsepower. They had four-wheel disc brakes, a four-speed manual gearbox, and a 19-gallon fuel tank. Pricing for the 2-door, 4-passenger 3.0CS Coupe began at $11,740.

The 3.0CS had few changes for 1974; examples sent to the North American market had protruding 5-mile-per-hour bumpers.

The 3.0 CSL was introduced in May 1972 and was built to homologate the competition version for the European Touring Car Championship. A total of 1,265 examples were constructed.

The 'L' in the name represented leicht, meaning light. Weight reduction measures included the removal of soundproofing and trim, Perspex side windows, and using aluminum alloy for the boot lid (trunk), bonnet (hood), and doors. The body was built using a thinner gauge of steel. The CSL was not sold in the United States. Five hundred examples were sent to the United Kingdom, and per the request of the importer, these examples retained the electric windows, E9 bumpers, and soundproofing. As a result, these examples are heavier, albeit more comfortable, than their other-market counterparts.

The engine powering the 3.0 CSL was initially the same as the 3.0 CS. In August 1972, displacement grew slightly to 3,003cc, which allowed it to qualify for the 'over three-liter' racing category. Another displacement increase occurred in 1973, this time to 3,153cc.

The CSL won the Drivers Title in the European Touring Car Championship in 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979. In the Group 5 Special Production guise, the CSL won three rounds of the 1976 World Championship for Makes. The CSL also competed in the FIA Group 4 category.

The final version of the E9 was the 2.5 CS of 1974. With its smaller and more fuel-efficient engine, this version was built in response to the oil crisis of 1973. A total of 874 examples were built through 1975, and none were sent to the U.S.
