1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Chevrolet introduced its fourth generation Monte Carlo in 1981, and by 1983 had re-introduced the Monte Carlo SS. Power was from a high-output version of the carbureted 305 CID V-8, the bodywork was revised, and a spoiler added to the rear. The 'base' Monte Carlo was priced at $8,550 with the six and $8,775 for the V8, while the V8-powered SS was priced at $10,250. A growing interest in rear-wheel drive mid-sizes kept the Monte Carlo a popular option and over 96,300 examples sold in 1983.

The optional T-Tops of 1983 were dropped for 1984, though they would return in 1985. The SS option was still available and 24,050 examples were selected with this feature. The 305 CID V8 engine in the SS saw a five horsepower increase over the previous year, now rated at 180 horsepower, and the interiors were available with Strato bucket seats (marking a return to the Montey Carlo after a two-year absence) and floor console as extra-cost options for the first time in place of the standard split bench seat with armrest. SS cars also had a high-stall-speed automatic transmission, 3.42:1 axle ratio, low-profile Goodyear Eagle GT white-letter P215/65R15 tires on 7-inch rally wheels, and dual exhausts. They had sport mirrors with the left side being remote operated, a sport suspension, tachometer, black roof drip moldings, gauges, and were devoid of the wheel opening moldings. The doors carried large decals announcing the 'SS' bodies, as did the rear spoiler and prominent 'ground effect' front panel.

The standard 229 cubic-inch V6 engine had overhead valves, an 8.6:1 compression ratio, four main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, a two-barrel Rochester carburetor, and delivered 110 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. Cars destined for California were fitted with a Buick 231 CID V6. The optional 305 CID V8 had a cast-iron block and head, 8.6:1 compression, a 4-barrel Rochester carburetor, hydraulic valve lifters, five main bearings, and delivered 150 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. The high-output 305 CID version, installed in the SS, was optional as well. The 350 CID V8 diesel option with fuel injection offered 105 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque and fitted in 168 vehicles. The 267 CID gas V8 engine option was no longer offered.

Styling updates for 1983 had included a more aggressive front end with the grille receiving larger cross-hatch holes. The hood had a stand-up ornament, brightwork was used for the headlamp bezels, lower bodyside moldings, windshield surrounds, and around the quarter-windows. Standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, front stabilizer bar, body-color bumpers, full wheel covers, twin bright mirrors, and dual horns. Ten exterior colors were available with five for the interior. The interiors had full-width front seats with folding armrests, door pull straps, day and night mirror, courtesy lights, lockable glove compartment, leather-like dash applique, color-keyed steering wheel, and lighters. The tires measured P195/75R14 SBR and there was a compact spare.

Styling and standard features for 1984 were similar to 1983, with cloth-upholstered bench seats with folding armrests, courtesy lights, dual horns, dual chrome mirrors, two-speed wiper and washers, a compact spare tire, and full wheel covers.

The 1984 Monte Carlo with V6 power had a factory base price of $8,940 and $8,300 for the V8. The Monte Carlo SS listed for $10,700. (Prices were approximately $400 higher than the previous year). 1984 sales were 40,461 more than in 1983, partly due to the loss of the Malibu. A total of 112,730 examples of the Monte Carlo were built in 1984, along with 24,050 of the Monte Carlo SS.
