For 1988, the BMW 5-Series remained mostly unchanged. Power came from an overhead-cam six-cylinder engine displacing 152 cubic-inches and offering 168 horsepower, up by six horsepower over the previous year. The 528e had a five-speed manual gearbox, power steering and brakes, ABS, power windows, central locking, cruise control, automatic air conditioning, tilt/slide power sunroof, power mirrors, heated driver's door lock, and cloth or leatherette upholstery. The 535i model added leather upholstery and steering wheel trim, plus larger tires. The 535iS models added aero body trim, an upgraded sport suspension, and sport leather seats. The high-performance M5 model shared its engine with the M6, which was a dual-overhead-cam six-cylinder unit offering 255 horsepower. It came similarly equipped to its 5-Series sibling, but added a deep front air dam with fog lamps, decklid spoiler, limited-slip differential, blackout body trim, and leather seats. They also had ten-way power sport seats, velour trunk trim, and 16-inch tires.
