1997 Porsche 993 Turbo S news, pictures, and information

This 1997 Porsche 993 Turbo S is an ex-Otis Chandler car and has only 1700 miles from new. It is finished in Sunoco blue with racing stripes and a blue leather interior. The engine is a six-cylinder air-cooled, 3600 cc unit with twin turbochargers and twin intercoolers. At this equates to an impressive 424 horsepower. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Perforated and ventilated hydraulic disc brakes with ABS are used for stopping power.

The 964 was replaced by the 993 in 1994 and when first introduced was only available in coupe configuration. The vehicles continued the appearance of the 911 series with minor refinement such as the smoothed out headlight treatments and the removal of the pronounced fenders. The roof and trunk lid were the only thing that was retained from the prior model. The multi-link rear suspension replaced the prior semi-trailing rear arms.

The turbocharged version was introduced in 1995 and for the first time in Porsche history was adapted to a four-wheel drive system. The 424 horsepower Turbo 'S' versions were first introduced in 1997 and came equipped with a few luxury amenities such as a leather interior. On the back could be found a bi-plane spoiler and air vents to help cool the engine and feed the turbochargers. They came with a steep $150,000 price tag which was almost fifty-percent more than the standard Turbo.

Mr. Otis Chandler commissioned this car for the sole purpose of paying homage to the Can-Am success achieved by the American racing legend, Mark Donohue. Its Sunoco livery with racing stripes similar to the Penske-run Porsche 917/30. With Donohue driving the Porsche 917/30 dominated the competition.

This Porsche was owned by Chandler for several years before it was purchased by an enthusiast based in Philadelphia. It was later sold to David Mohlman before it was sold at the Christie's auction.
