Chassis Num: 249478

The SS90 was the first true sports car produced by Jaguar (then known as SS Cars) and only 23 examples were produced before the SS 100 was built. Chassis #249478 is especially important as it was the very first SS 90 to be sold onto private hands and registered for the road, on June 1, 1935. The original owner of this car was Captain Black, Managing director of Standard Motors, the supplier of chassis and engines to SS cars. His UK registration number was AVC 318.

Tourer

SS Cars Ltd, now know as Jaguar built a total of 53 of these automobiles. This 1935 SS 1 Tourer example is one of seventeen with the six-cylinder side-valve 2663cc engine. This example was dispatched on December 26, 1935 from SS Cars Ltd, Coventry, England to British Motor Cars Ltd, New York City. The automobile is noted for its long and low rakish coachwork, elaborate armchair seating, and sporting wire wheels with a chrome outer rim. The 1930's advertising slogan was '1000 pound looks....for 310 pounds.'

This example is the only known example running on its original R.A.G. carburetors and is known for being an authentically restored example.

Roadster

This S.S. 90 prototype was built by William Lyons at the soon-to-be-renamed Jaguar factory as an experimental short wheelbase model with a standard in-line 2.6-liter, 6-cylinder engine producing around 90 bhp. The shortened chassis is based on a modified SS1 design. Production of the S.S. 90 started in 1935 adn around 25 cars were built before the appearance of the much more successful SS100 Jaguar. This prototype is easily distinguished by its sweeping rear bodywork, which was shortened for production. This car made its first appearance in the hands of Brian Lewis at the RAC Rally in 1935. It later appeared at the 1935 Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb. In 1938, it was owned by Hugh Kennard, a serving RAF Spitfire pilot stationed at Duxford, north of London during the Second World War. After several owners the car was bought by its current owner who had it restored.

It has been consigned by H&H for auction as part of the Roger Allen Collection at the company's Duxford sale on October 4.
