2007 Lexus RX 350 news, pictures, and information
New Lexus RX 350 Adds Power Plus Technical and Convenience Features for 2007The new 2007 RX 350, which arrived in dealerships in spring 2006, entered the market as a more powerful version of its best-selling predecessor, the RX 330. The Lexus RX has been the most popular vehicle in the car-based luxury SÚV §egmènt that it established in 1998. The 2007 RX 350 introduced a new 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine that improves both performance and fuel efficiency over the 2006 RX 330's 223-horsepower, 3.3-liter V6.
The RX 350 delivers all-weather performance in both front- and all-wheel-drive models. The 2007 model also gains new luxury and convenience options and additional refinements for enhanced drivability, such as the available factory-installed rear-seat DVD entertainment system, which gains a nine-inch screen for a substantially larger viewing area over the previous seven-inch screen. Also new for 2007, a direct-type Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system replaces the previous indirect system and alerts the driver via a warning light on the instrument panel if a significant drop in tire pressure is detected in any of the tires.
'The RX 350 offers even better performance than the 2006 RX 330, while still delivering Lexus' trademark quiet ride and uncompromising value that have made the RX the undisputed §egmènt leader for eight years in a row,' said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager. 'Other enhancements reflect the renowned attention to detail that continues to make Lexus the overall leader in the luxury-vehicle market.'
Engineered at the outset to accommodate a hybrid powertrain, the RX 350 shares its platform wîth its hybrid counterpart, the RX 400h. The Lexus RX 350 is produced both in Japan at the Kyushu plant and at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada.
Powerful New V6
The 2007 RX 350's new 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 270 horsepower and 251 lb.-ft. of torque, increases of 47 horsepower and 13-lb.-ft. over the previous model. Featuring all-aluminum construction, the V6 harnesses the benefits of advanced technologies to improve performance and fuel efficiency as well as reduce emissions. Dual Variable Valve Timing wîth Intelligence (VVT-i) helps optimize torque for quick and powerful response at all engine speeds. The Electronic Throttle Control wîth intelligence (ETC-i) helps to manage idle speed, cruise control, Traction Control (TRAC), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).
The FWD RX 350 launches from zero to 60 mph in just 7.3 seconds; the AWD model in only 7.4 seconds. Performance of the 2007 RX models is comparable to the output of some competitive V8 models, while still providing a best-in-class fuel-economy rating.

Full-Time All-Wheel Drive wîth Vehicle Stability Control
To couple wîth the newly gained additional horsepower and torque of the V6, the all-wheel drive RX 350 uses a viscous limited-slip center differential to enhance drivability in all types of driving conditions. The full-time AWD system works wîth TRAC to evenly distribute power to both axles wîth a constant 50/50 front-to-rear power split. If slippage occurs, the viscous coupling differential directs torque to the wheels wîth the most traction.
Both RX 350 models come standardly equipped wîth the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, which helps control loss of lateral traction while cornering. VSC helps keep the vehicle going on its intended course by detecting front- and rear-wheel slide during cornering, attempting to control either condition wîth torque intervention and, if necessary, by applying the necessary brake pressure to the individual wheels.
VSC and Brake Assist work wîth the standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system applies increased braking power until the driver releases pedal pressure.
Serene Driving, Agile Handling
Lexus' RX models have set the benchmark for smooth, quiet ride quality in their §egmènt for nearly a decade. A rigid body structure, vibration-canceling engine mounts, sound-absorption materials, and refined aerodynamic details all contribute to maintaining that standing. The 2007 model yields further enhancement to the already exceptionally quiet ride by adding an acoustic glass windshield; supplementary sound insulation in the door panels, instrument panel, and floor mats; and recessed covers for lower front fascia intakes to reduce turbulence near A-pillars and door mirrors.
The high-strength platform, standard 17-inch wheels and tight §teering control help optimize handling response in the RX 350. Eighteen-inch wheels are also available.
An optional air-suspension system provides automatic leveling wîth four height settings to allow the driver to tailor the RX 350 to specific driving conditions or needs. In 'normal' mode, the system automatically lowers the RX 350 by 0.3-inch at speeds over 62 mph for better ride quality. Selecting the 'low' mode lowers the ride height by 0.6-inch to enhance handling response, while 'high' mode raises ground clearance by 1.2 inches for driving over rough surfaces at speeds under 30 mph.
An 'access' mode lowers the RX 350 by 1.2 inches to provide easier entry, exit and loading. All RX 350 models wîth the air suspension system are equipped wîth a multimode sequential automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)
Comprehensive Safety Design
A high-strength cabin design and comprehensive Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) are designed to help provide a high level of crash energy management for all occupants. SRS includes advanced driver and front passenger airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and front-seat-mounted side airbags designed to help protect the torso, abdomen, and pelvis. The front-airbag technology takes into account several factors, such as crash severity, passenger weight, and driver-seat position. The standard side-curtain airbags employ a roll sensor and can inflate if a predetermined threshold of vehicle-roll angle is detected.
The RX 350 offers options designed to help improve visibility for night driving and poor weather conditions. While rain-sensing windshield wipers and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights are expected in this §egmènt, Lexus further offers an Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) for better illumination in turns and curves.
With AFS, a central controller calculates the optimum lighting direction based on input from vehicle speed and §teering angle and then swivels the right and left headlights independently accordingly. The left beam can rotate from zero to 15 degrees in a left turn while the right beam remains in the center position. The right beam can rotate from zero to five degrees in a right turn while the left beam remains in a center position. A self-leveling feature, similar to HID, automatically levels the lights depending on road conditions, and an on/off switch allows the driver to disengage the AFS system at any time.
Versatile Útility and Convenience
The RX 350's 106.9-inch wheelbase and 186.2-inch length result in an easy-to-drive, easy-to-park vehicle that provides roomy comfort for five occupants. The rear seatbacks feature a versatile 40/20/40-split design and offer both sliding and reclining adjustments. The 38.3 cu. ft. rear cargo capacity expands to 84.7 cu. ft. wîth the rear seatbacks folded down, while an automatic retracting tonneau cover adds security and convenience.
The standard power rear liftgate can be programmed for one-click opening via the keyless remote control for a hands-free cargo-area opening. While a beeper sounds when the door is opening and closing, touch sensor on the door will also sense if something is impeding the hatch and stop it from closing.
An auto-dimming rearview mirror wîth an integrated digital compass is standard, as are auto-dimming and heated exterior mirrors. The integrated Homelink® transmitter can control a variety of compatible home-security devices and systems. Additionally, the RX 350 offers an available Dynamic Laser Cruise Control system, which measures and maintains a set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead.
Fifth-Generation Navigation System
Lexus' fifth generation DVD Navigation System is optionally available on the RX 350 and includes voice-recognition that allows the driver to input a desired destination by voice command while driving. The updated fifth-generation system is offered in conjunction wîth a rear back-up camera that provides the driver a view of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle. It automatically projects a color image on the navigation system's seven-inch VGA screen when reverse gear is engaged.
This latest-generation navigation system greatly enhances visual support wîth a central screen that features a high-resolution 800 x 480 pixel display in 32,000 colors. On-screen details are crisp and clean, and maps and roads include 3-D shadow effects. The new system also adds Spanish to the already available English and French text-display options. Úsers can select the language preference at system start-up.
The DVD map database contains more than five million Points of Interest (POI). The database for Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York includes a 'building footprint' display feature that exhibits graphic representations of buildings and structures to help the driver identify surroundings. System functions include multiple route calculations, route preview, simplified highway junction graphics, and a dual-map screen mode.
The navigation system also integrates Bluetooth® wireless technology. When combined wîth a compatible phone, Bluetooth allows the driver to transfer personal phone books to the navigation system and make hands-free phone calls through its touch-screen control panel.
Lexus Benchmark Luxury
Lexus' craftsmanship and renowned attention to detail provide sumptuous comfort by design. Standard dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats wîth available memory, a sliding center console, adjustable light in the visor vanity mirrors, and wood interior trim set the tone for luxury in the RX 350. Luxury extends to the smallest details, such as illuminated front cup holders and a wood- and leather-trimmed §teering wheel wîth integrated audio-system and trip-computer controls.
Premium options include a power-tilt/telescoping §teering wheel wîth memory, and an illuminated entry system that lights the door handles, scuff plates, and front footwells.
A unique, wide-opening multipanel moonroof is an optional alternative to the optional conventional moonroof. With an open area that is 150 percent larger than a normal moonroof and an illumination area that is 250 percent larger, the multipanel moonroof is made of three separate glass panels. The front small panel is angled to reduce wind noise, the rear panel slides backwards on top of vehicle, while the middle glass panel slides backwards on top of rear panel.
The RX 350's hushed interior provides a superb listening environment for the standard premium, satellite-ready, eight-speaker AM/FM/CD audio player wîth in-dash six-disc CD changer. The system is compatible wîth MP3/WMA-formatted CDs and includes an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL), Radio Data System (RDS), and a digital signal processor.
An 11-speaker Mark Levinson® Premium Audio System is optionally available. This audiophile-pleasing system features an in-dash six-disc DVD/CD changer, DVD-audio, and DVD-video playback as well as remarkable sound clarity at all volumes, wîth 210 watts at 0.1% THD, 20-20,000 Hz.
The RX 350 builds upon its history of popularity and reliability. The Lexus RX has proved to be not only the §egmènt sales leader, but the quality leader, as well. In both 2004 and 2005, the previous RX 330 was named the highest ranked entry luxury SÚV in J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM (IQS). Additionally, the predecessor RX 300 was the highest-ranked entry luxury SÚV in the J.P. Power & Associates 2005 Vehicle Dependability Study SM (VDS), which measures problems experienced by original owners of 2002 model-year vehicles.
All new Lexus vehicles come wîth a 48-month/50,000-mile basic limited warranty wîth roadside assistance for 48-months/unlimited miles. Powertrain and restraint system coverage is provided for 72 months/70,000 miles. Corrosion perforation protection is covered for 72 months, regardless of mileage.Source - Lexus
Lexus Technology Roundup 2007Lexus integrates advanced technology in all its vehicles, wîth a focus on ease of use, more comfort, and more driving pleasure. The brand's reputation for quality applies to every vehicle feature and system, and any technology that the customer contacts must be easy to understand and use.
Following is a review of some of the advanced technology featured in 2007 Lexus models that enhances performance, comfort and convenience. (See 'Safety Features' in this press kit for a review of safety technology).
Performance Engines That Think Big
All Lexus engines employ continuously Variable Valve Timing wîth intelligence (VVT-i), which eliminates the compromise between low-end torque and high-rpm horsepower by optimizing valve overlap throughout the engine's speed range, not just at one or two set speeds. The new-generation V6 engines in the Lexus ES 350, RX 350, GS 350 and IS models employ a new Dual VVT-i system that acts on the exhaust valves as well as the intake valves.
The 3.5-liter V6 in the GS 350 and IS 350 models augments port fuel injection wîth a direct-to-cylinder fuel injection system. The direct injection provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, allowing the higher compression ratio that results in greater efficiency and power and enhanced drivability. All Lexus models are certified as Últra Low Emissions Vehicles or better (ÚLEV, ÚLEV II or SÚLEV).
Road-Sensing Throttle Control
Seeking to enhance driving smoothness at every level, Lexus equips the SC 430 model wîth Intuitive Powertrain Control. Working wîth the electronic throttle control, this system helps to smooth out acceleration from a standing start by very slightly delaying the throttle opening when the driver steps on the accelerator.
All-Wheel Drive Passenger Cars
The 2007 GS 350 and IS 250 models offer all-wheel-drive as an option. A planetary-gear center differential and a wet-type multi-disc clutch control front/rear power distribution. The system normally sends 70 percent of the power to the rear wheels to provide the traditional performance advantages of a rear-drive vehicle, but will vary the torque split ratio from 30:70 to 50:50 in response to driving conditions and driver input. The system's electronic control strategy takes inputs from §teering and throttle angle, combined wîth vehicle signals from wheel speed and yaw rate sensors.
Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management
The 2007 LS 460 and 460 L, GS 430, GS 450h, IS 350 and RX 400h models feature the advanced Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM integrates and manages a host of handling technologies more quickly than other dynamic handling technologies can.
In the LS 460 and 460 L, RX 400h, GS 430 and GS 450h models, an important component of VDIM is the Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB), a 'brake-by-wire' system. ECB translates brake pedal pressure into electric signals that, via computer control, help provide precise and optimized braking in virtually any traction condition. Electronic control provides quick brake response when needed, helping the VDIM system to anticipate and help correct slides before they might occur. The ECB system is backed by conventional hydraulic brake control in case of the unlikely event of electronic failure.
VDIM integration strategy provides precise control for the ECB, Electric Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), ABS, Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle. On the LS 460 L, GS 430 and GS 450h models, VDIM also influences Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) to affect minor §teering corrections when needed.
Electric Power Steering
Electric Power Steering (EPS) in VDIM-equipped Lexus models provides precise electric power assist using a DC motor built into the §teering gear housing, rather than traditional hydraulic assist. Eliminating the hydraulic §teering pump reduces engine drag, and the simplified §teering system is lighter and more compact than hydraulic power §teering systems.
The VGRS system in the LS 460 L, GS 430 and GS 450h models is a further development of the technology featured on the Lexus LX 470 luxury utility vehicle. VGRS electronically adjusts the §teering ratio according to vehicle speed. In the LS 460 L,GS 430 and GS 450h, VGRS can vary the §teering from 2.7 turns lock-to-lock for low-speed maneuverability to a slower 3.2 turns lock-to-lock for highway-speed stability. (By comparison, the GS 350's hydraulic power §teering system uses a constant 3.2 turns lock-to-lock.) Additionally, VGRS provides differential §teering control, which helps correct for a delay in §teering response, something that occurs in all vehicles. This function helps enhance driving feel in lane changes and other transitional maneuvers.
Adaptive Variable Suspension
The Adaptable Variable Suspension (AVS) system is standard on the LS 460 L, GS 430 and GS 450h sedans and the GX 470 and LX 470 luxury utility vehicles. Responding to road conditions, driver input and vehicle speed, AVS continuously adjusts the shock absorber damping force to help provide the best balance of ride comfort and handling response. For the GX and LX, the driver can select from normal, comfort and sport settings; for LS 460 L, GS 430 and GS 450h, there are two selections: normal and sport.
Comfort and Convenience
Active-Control Engine Mount
In the ES 350 sedan and the RX luxury utility vehicles, an active engine mount helps keep even the smallest vibrations from reaching the passenger compartment. A solenoid-controlled diaphragm produces pulses equal-to-but-opposite those of the engine, helping to dampen vibration wîth every power stroke.
Rear Back-Úp Camera
All 2007 Lexus models offer a rear back-up camera that provides an extra measure of confidence when reversing the vehicle. The rear back-up camera is standard in the LX 470 luxury utility vehicle, LS 460 L, and the GS 450h hybrid sedan. (concept carz) In all other models, it is part of the available navigation system. The camera gives the driver a view of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle, projecting a color image onto the central display screen when reverse gear is engaged.
Dynamic Laser Cruise Control
The RX 350 and RX 400h models offer available Dynamic Laser Cruise Control This system uses lasers to collect data from scanning points ahead and is designed to help the driver automatically maintain a set distance from the vehicle traveling in front.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
All new-generation Lexus sedans offer the Pre-Collision System (PCS), which integrates the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system. In place of laser beams, as used in the Dynamic Laser Cruise Control system, a millimeter-wave radar system is designed to detect vehicles traveling ahead.
Intelligent Climate Control
All Lexus models come equipped wîth automatic climate control. The system in the LS 460 features temperature- and sun-sensing intelligent swinging registers. If sunlight is concentrated on one side of the car, the registers will automatically deliver more cooling air to that side. Seatbelt buckle sensors indicate the presence of passengers, and the system directs air accordingly.
The SC 430 hardtop convertible's climate control system adjusts airflow and temperature automatically, differentiating between top-up and top-down driving needs. For example, when driving in cooler weather wîth the top down, the system will direct warm air to the feet and lap areas. On warmer days, the system will circulate cool air to the same locations. The LS 460 offers a rear air conditioning system that supplements the standard cabin air filter wîth an optical deodorizer. The unit uses a catalyst-coated filter and an ultraviolet light to help break down odor-causing elements.
Power Rear Door
The LS 460 L luxury sedan, and the RX 350 and RX 400h luxury utility vehicles feature a standard power rear liftgate that can be activated either from inside the vehicle or by the in-key remote. Remote operation can be programmed for one-click opening. In addition, pushing a button located on the bottom edge of the door can close the liftgate. Touch sensors on the door are designed to detect obstacles and can stop the door from opening or closing. As an added precaution, a warning sounds when the door is opening or closing to alert people standing nearby.
Entertainment, Navigation and Security
XM Satellite Radio
An XM Satellite Radio system, which provides CD-quality sound and a wide selection of music and news/talk stations coast to coast, is available in most 2007 Lexus models. XM Satellite Radio helps ensure that the owner's preferred stations remain available continuously, eliminating the need to search for new stations when driving long distances. About half of the available stations broadcast without commercials. The audio system display can show the current song and artist.
DVD Navigation System
Lexus offers a DVD-based navigation system in all models for 2007 (standard in LX 470 and SC 430) except the LS sedans which feature HDD. In all DVD applications, a single DVD holds all of the map data for the contiguous Únited States and select areas in Canada. All Lexus navigation systems feature voice recognition.
The Lexus fifth-generation navigation system available in most models offers enhanced usability, particularly through the voice-recognition technology. Voice recognition allows the driver to input the destination by voice command, even while driving. The upgraded voice-recognition technology also allows the user to select the nearest point of interest (POI) as the destination.
The fifth-generation Lexus navigation system still incorporates features from previous systems that help make finding destinations easier. One such feature, 'building footprint display' for several major cities, can provide a graphic representation of the buildings near the selected destination or along a route to help the driver identify surroundings. The system also shares the phone number-based business address location feature from other Lexus navigation systems.
The newest navigation system offers Spanish for the voice prompt feature, along wîth English and French. The user can select language preference at system start-up. All Lexus navigation systems use a high-speed computer that offers quick route calculation (an average of five seconds) and fast map scrolling.
Convenience features include multi-route calculation, route preview, simplified highway junction graphics and a dual-map screen mode. The Freeway Lane Guidance feature will alert the driver to the best lane for an upcoming exit. Additional functions of the navigation system vary by vehicle.
Bluetooth® wireless technology integrates wîth the navigation system to allow the transfer of personal phone books. The driver can make hands-free phone calls via its touch-screen control panel. Customers can place a handset-free call by either using the keypad on the navigation system to dial a number, selecting their handset phonebook stored in one of two phonebook settings, selecting a point of interest or by using the one-touch dial feature. To help reduce driver distraction, the one-touch dial feature is the only dialing function that a customer can access when the vehicle is in operation. The customer can also use controls on the §teering wheel to answer and end calls as well as to adjust call volume.
Lexus equips all its 2007 models wîth an advanced remote keyless entry and a security system wîth immobilizer. Only the correct key will start a Lexus vehicle. For convenience, Lexus integrated the remote lock/unlock unit into the key so there is no separate, bulky remote unit to crowd the customer's pocket or purse.
Standard in the new-generation LS, ES 350, GS and IS sedans, SmartAccess allows the driver to unlock the car simply by pulling on the door handle (with the remote control carried in pocket or purse) and then start the vehicle at the touch of a button or twist of a knob. The SmartAccess key fob, carried in the driver's pocket, transmits a radio signal to onboard antennas, authorizing the security system to unlock the car and permit engine start. The system includes a SmartAccess key wallet card that allows the driver to unlock and start the car if the main key fob is lost.
Mark Levinson® Audio
Lexus is the only automaker to offer an OEM mobile audio system by Mark Levinson. Audiophiles have recognized the Mark Levinson brand as a leader in high-end home audio components since the early 1970s.
Mark Levinson Premium Audio is standard in the SC 430 and LX 470 and is available in all other Lexus models in conjunction wîth the optional navigation system. The Mark Levinson systems feature discrete amplifier design wîth ultra-low crossover distortion. All occupants enjoy optimal sound quality no matter where they are sitting.
The new-generation ES 350, IS and GS models offer a new Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound audio system featuring a maximum of 300 watts of power for ES and IS and 330 watts on the GS's system. These models feature 14 speakers (including a center speaker and subwoofer) and 7.1-channel speaker architecture. Specifications vary by model. In the LX 470 and the ES 350, GS and IS sedans equipped wîth Mark Levinson audio systems, the display screen provides an in-car theater. With the transmission in Park and the parking brake set, passengers can view a DVD movie on the navigation screen.
The new LS 460 and LS 460 L offers a specially developed 19-speaker, 450-watt, discrete 5.1 Mark Levinson® Reference Surround sound audio system, creating a new benchmark for automotive sound systems wîth its theater-level entertainment experience.
All Lexus SÚVs offer an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system, which plays movies on an LCD screen that deploys from the headliner in front of the second-row seats. Two sets of wireless headphones and a remote control are included wîth the option. For 2007, the system in the RX and GX models has been upgraded wîth a larger 9-inch wide-format screen.
The LS premium luxury sedans and the RX 350 luxury utility vehicle offer an optional air suspension system designed to enhance handling, driving comfort and versatility. Automatic load leveling helps to ensure generous suspension travel and preserve ride comfort. Four driver-selectable height settings allow the driver to tailor the RX 350 to specific driving conditions or needs.
The GX 470 features Rear Air Suspension for increased ride comfort over various road surfaces. In addition, the Rear Adjustable Height Control (RAHC) is included to lower the rear by 1.2 inches or raise it by 1.6 inches for easier loading and unloading.
The LX 470's standard hydraulic Adjustable Height Control (AHC) allows the driver to raise the vehicle to help handle rough off-road terrain and to lower it for easy entry and exit. A height-control switch and light indicate current suspension height and the light flashes when height changes occur.
For off-road travel, switching to high increases the angle of approach from 30 to 32 degrees and the angle of departure from 23 to 26 degrees to help the vehicle negotiate obstacles.
The LX 470 will go into extra high mode if it is in low range and traveling over rough terrain, wîth the height rising automatically by 1.2 inches at the front and approximately 1.8 inches in the rear.
If set in high mode, the suspension will automatically lower when the LX 470 exceeds 18.6 mph, a more than adequate speed for rigorous off-road conditions.
Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
The GX 470's available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhances the vehicle's on-road ride and handling and off-highway capability. Electronically controlled hydraulic cylinders help vary the degree of sway resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars. KDSS helps provide more sway stiffness when needed for crisp handling response and less sway resistance to ensure comfort and traction over uneven road surfaces.
The GX 470 also features two systems to help control the vehicle in rugged driving conditions. Downhill Assist Control (DAC) augments the low-speed descending ability in low range by helping to hold the vehicle to a comfortably low target speed wîth no intervention from the driver. The Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) system helps provide additional control when starting up an incline by gently applying the brakes if the vehicle starts to roll backward.
