2007 Subaru Impreza
The Impreza forms the basis of the Subaru World Rally Championship (WRC) competition car, and customers benefit from the car's robust construction and All-Wheel Drive agility in all driving conditions. A 173-hp Boxer engine makes Impreza one of the most powerful cars in its segment. Yet, these All-Wheel Drive models return admirable fuel economy that's comparable to some two-wheel drive models: an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg highway for the 5-speed manual transmission, and 23/28 mpg for the optional 4-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

2007 Subaru ImprezaThe Impreza has been recognized as a safety leader, garnering the highest award from the Insurance Institute for highway Safety (IIHS) – Top Safety Pick, Gold – in the small car segment, achieving the highest rating ('Good') in frontal offset, side and rear impact tests. All Impreza models feature a 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), the dual-stage Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag System, and front seat head/chest side-impact air bags.
For 2007, the Outback Sport Special Edition returns with revised equipment, including an automatic climate control system, a 240-Watt total output AM/FM premium stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer, six upgraded speakers and a sub-woofer, plus standard SIRIÚS Satellite Radio. Also on the Outback Sport Special Edition, the ashtray has been replaced with an auxiliary audio input jack for connecting iPods and similar music players for playback through the audio system. On Impreza 2.5 i models and the standard Outback Sport, a storage pocket has replaced the ashtray. Interior trim revisions include a new soft-grip steering wheel design and new shift handle design.

The distinctive Subaru front-end design for Impreza features a three-section mesh-type grill inspired by the company's aircraft heritage, plus boldly styled headlights with smoke-tinted lenses. Sedan models feature wide-body fenders and side spoilers. The wagon models have their own flared fender design and also feature side spoilers. An aluminum ?hood reduces weight over the front wheels on all Impreza models.

Impreza 2.5 i – The All-Wheel Drive Sport-Compact
The Impreza 2.5 i Sedan and Sport Wagon models offer outstanding value in a segment where All-Wheel Drive is a rarity. Both models are equipped with sport-tuned suspension, standard 16-inch alloy wheels and sport-design front seats. The generous standard equipment makes the Impreza 2.5 i models among the best-equipped cars in their class: Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and door locks, remote keyless entry system, AM/FM stereo system with single-disc CD player, tilt-adjustable steering column, security system, an outside temperature gauge and variable intermittent windshield wipers.

The Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon offers excellent utility and versatility, providing 27.9 cu. ft. of cargo space with the 60/40-split rear seatback up and 61.6 cu. ft. of space with the seatbacks folded down. Útility bars built into the cargo area sidewalls enhance versatility in wagon models.

Outback Sport – The Sporty Crossover
Outback Sport, based on the Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon, helped usher in the crossover category over a decade ago. Outback Sport styling is highlighted by new-for-2007 Úrban Gray Metallic lower body color, side moldings and bumpers, plus projector-beam halogen fog lights. The Outback Sport Special Edition continues for 2007 with its high-value package of additional amenities. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 4-wheel independent heavy-duty raised suspension and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 all-season tires give Outback Sport all-road, all-weather capability. Standard features are shared with the Impreza 2.5 i Sport Wagon and add a 12-volt cargo area power outlet, roof rails with cross bars and a ?rear bumper step pad.
Boxer Powerhouse
The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine that powers all Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models is among the most powerful in its displacement category, with 173 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 166 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. The i-Active Valve Lift system helps to ensure responsive performance at all engine speeds. Úsing oil pressure generated by engine speed and load, the i-Active Valve Lift system varies lift on one intake valve by locking the tappet into a higher position by means of a transverse pin. The effect is that ?of having two separate tappets to act on the camshaft lobe operating the intake valve. At low engine speeds the two intake valves open at different levels, causing a swirl of air and fuel and boosting torque. ?At higher speeds, both intake valves are opened in the 'high' position to increase horsepower.

A smooth-shifting 5-speed manual transmission is standard on all Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models. The optional 4-speed direct control electronic automatic transmission features an advanced adaptive shift control system that adjusts transmission shift points based on driver input and vehicle load to optimize engine performance. The slope control feature provides engine braking on declines. A slip-type lockup torque converter provides semi-locking engagement in third and fourth gears and then full lockup in fourth once cruising speed is reached. The automatic transmission automatically and transparently selects between 'Normal' and 'Sport' modes in response to the driver's throttle input.

Advanced Safety Construction
The Subaru Ring Frame Reinforced body structure provides Impreza models with outstanding protection in many types of collisions. A hydroformed front subframe and side sills along with tailored-blank welded B-pillars provide an exceptionally strong structure. The high degree of rigidity contributes to sharp handling response and smooth ride quality while helping to reduce interior noise.

2007 Subaru ImprezaAll 2007 Impreza models are equipped with the Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system and standard front seat head/chest side-impact air bags. The driver's side front air bag deploys according to the driver's proximity to the steering wheel, as measured by a sensor on the seat track. In the passenger side front seat, a sensor module detects weight on the seat – first determining if it's occupied, and if so by a child or adult – to control air bag deployment. As part of the system, the dashboard features an 'Airbag' indicator light.

On all Impreza models, the standard 4-channel / 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). This system enhances braking performance and stability by actively optimizing braking force between the front and rear wheels according to how the vehicle is loaded with passengers and cargo.

In all Subaru models, the front 3-point seatbelts integrate electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters. Active front seat head restraints in the Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport models are designed ?to help reduce whiplash injury in a rear collision. The safety brake pedal system is designed to yield during a serious frontal impact in order to help reduce injury to the driver's lower limbs.

Two Types of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive forms the common core technology on all Subaru models. With more brands adding All-Wheel Drive, it is worth noting that Subaru introduced four-wheel drive passenger cars more than 30 years ago and automatic full-time All-Wheel Drive 20 years ago. In 1997, Subaru became the first brand in the Ú.S. to make All-Wheel Drive standard on all models.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a complete system comprised of the horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine and the full-time power distribution system that varies by model and transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The aluminum Boxer engine and simple, symmetrical drivetrain layout help to lower the center of gravity, which in turn contributes to precision handling response.

The Impreza 2.5 i and Outback Sport lines feature two versions of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, both of which power all four wheels all the time and can transfer more power to the wheels with the best grip. Models equipped with the ?5-speed manual transmission utilize a viscous coupling locking bevel-gear center differential that distributes power 50:50, transferring more power to the wheels with the best traction should slippage occur.

In models with the 4-speed direct control automatic transmission, an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages power distribution based on acceleration, deceleration and available traction, also transferring more power to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur. Control logic in the automatic transmission AWD system enhances stability by monitoring individual wheel speeds and reacting more quickly to wheel slippage. The control logic also helps ?to improve tight corner braking, contributing to more neutral handling response (reduced understeer ?and oversteer).

SUBARU CONTINUES TO ENHANCE IMPREZA® WRX® FOR 2007

2007 Subaru Impreza- Úpgraded Audio Includes MP3/WMA CD Playback
- New Audio Input Jack for iPods and Similar Players
- New SIRIÚS® Satellite Radio Capability2007 Subaru Impreza
Subaru of America, Inc., which last year introduced a restyled, re-powered Impreza WRX line, including two new models, adds a number of audio enhancements to the 2007 models. The All-Wheel Drive WRX shook up the sport compact segment when it was first introduced in the Ú.S. for 2002 and continues to stand as the performance value standard for this category.

2007 Subaru Impreza
The 2007 Impreza WRX is offered in five versions: the WRX TR Sedan; the standard WRX Sedan and Sport Wagon models, and the WRX Limited Sedan and Sport Wagon models. All WRX models are powered by a 224-hp turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter Boxer engine, and all WRX models back up their exciting engine performance with specially tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a powerful 4-wheel ventilated disc brake system.

2007 Subaru ImprezaResponding to customers' evolving mobile audio performance needs, Subaru has upgraded the standard audio system in WRX and WRX Limited models for 2007. The standard 120-watt AM/FM premium stereo, which includes a 6-disc in-dash CD changer and six upgraded speakers, now offers MP3/WMA CD playback, a new audio input jack and SIRIÚS Satellite Radio Capability. The audio input jack, which can accommodate an iPod® or similar portable music player, replaces the ashtray, and a 12v power outlet replaces the lighter socket. Interior trim revisions enhance the feeling of quality in the Impreza WRX and include a new steering wheel and shifter handle design.

An aluminum hood reduces weight over the front wheels on all Impreza models.

The 293-horsepower Impreza WRX STI® introduced for 2004 remains the brand's performance flagship and adds a new WRX STI Limited model plus drivetrain enhancements for 2007.

Three Levels of WRX Performance Value
With an emphasis on pure performance, the WRX TR marks the entry point to this legendary sport-compact. Available only as a sedan, the WRX TR is identical to the standard WRX Sedan in terms of performance specification, substituting value-oriented feature content and exterior trim from the Impreza 2.5 i Sedan.

The WRX TR buyer does not give up comfort and convenience, however, as the extensive standard equipment list includes air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors and door locks, leather-wrapped steering wheel, AM/FM stereo system with single-disc CD player, remote keyless entry, security system with new engine immobilizer, an outside temperature gauge and carpeted floormats. (See comparison below.) Subaru dealers offer a range of Genuine Subaru Accessories that the WRX TR buyer can add in, all covered under the standard limited warranty. Audio upgrades are among the choices.

WRX Limited Models Add Extra Dose of Comfort and Refinement
The 2006 model year saw the expansion of the WRX line at the higher end, as well. The WRX Limited Sedan and WRX Limited Sport Wagon are designed to appeal to customers who may also consider European performance sedans and sport wagons. Both of these models include the equipment from the standard WRX and add more comfort and luxury with leather seating surfaces, power glass moonroof, dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. The WRX Limited Sedan in addition features a rear trunk spoiler.

224-hp Turbo Powerhouse
The 2.5-liter WRX turbo engine shares its architecture and technology with the WRX STI engine. The double overhead-cam (DOHC) 2.5-liter horizontally opposed (Boxer) 4-cylinder engine is based on a specially reinforced semi-closed deck engine block. The WRX engine produces 224 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 226 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3,600 rpm. Aluminum alloy pistons and forged high-carbon steel connecting rods help ensure consistent and reliable performance under all driving conditions. The functional hood scoop provides a stream of fresh air to the engine-mounted intercooler.

2007 Subaru ImprezaAs on the Impreza WRX STI, Subaru Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing technology optimizes the engine's volumetric efficiency at all engine speeds. Off-the-line acceleration and mid-range performance are particularly strong. An Electronic Throttle Control system provides direct engine response while ensuring optimal fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The WRX engine meets the strict Low Emissions Vehicle II (LEV II) certification.

Úpgraded Suspension and Brake Systems
The sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension in the Impreza WRX provides an excellent balance of handling response and compliant ride quality. The suspension is particularly adept at dealing with road imperfections, ensuring steady tracking even through bumpy curves. The quick steering ratio yields 2.6 turns lock-to-lock, and the steering has been tuned to provide the driver with an ideal amount of road feel.

All WRX models roll on standard with 7-spoke 17 x 7-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 215/45 R17 all-season performance tires. The powerful brake system employs ventilated discs front and rear -- 11.5-inch diameter in front with four-piston calipers and 11.3-inch diameter in the rear with two-piston calipers. Painted red and featuring the SÚBARÚ name in white, the calipers also make a strong visual statement.

Subaru designed the WRX sound insulation package to filter out excessive road noise while allowing the driver to enjoy the distinctive growl of the turbo Boxer engine.
The WRX Sport Wagon models offer excellent utility and versatility. The standard 60/40-split rear seatback folds flat against the seat cushion to extend the cargo area. Impreza wagon models provide 27.9 cu. ft. of cargo space with the 60/40-split rear seatback up and 61.6 cu. ft. of space with the seatbacks folded down. Útility bars built into the cargo area sidewalls enhance versatility in wagon models.

Two Types of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Impreza WRX has built a reputation as the sport-compact for all seasons, thanks in large part to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive that provides both a performance advantage and serves as an all-weather handling aid. In models with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the AWD system uses a viscous coupling locking bevel-gear center differential integrated into the transmission case. This full-time AWD system distributes engine power 50:50, transferring more power to the wheels with the best traction should slippage occur.

The WRX Limited models are available with the optional 4-speed automatic transmission with the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The VTD automatic transmission uses a planetary gear-type center differential that splits the power 45:55, with the rear-wheel bias enhancing handling agility and the performance driving feel. An electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch controls power distribution between the front and rear wheels in response to driver input and driving conditions. All WRX models are equipped with a viscous limited-slip rear differential.

Rings of Safety
The Subaru Ring Frame Reinforced body structure provides Impreza models with outstanding protection in many types of collisions. A hydroformed front subframe and side sills along with tailored-blank welded B-pillars provide an exceptionally strong structure. The high degree of rigidity contributes to sharp handling response and smooth ride quality while helping to reduce interior noise.

Impreza safety features include 3-point seatbelts for all five seating positions, with electrically triggered pre-tensioners and force limiters in front. Active front seat head restraints in the Impreza WRX TR model are designed to help reduce whiplash injury in a rear collision. All WRX models are equipped with the dual-stage deployment Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag system* and front seat head/chest side-impact air bags.

Impreza sedan models have integrated headrests for the rear seats, and the wagon models use removable headrests to enable rear seatback folding. All Impreza models are equipped with the LATCH child restraint anchorage system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) for use with compatible child safety seats. The safety brake pedal system in all Impreza models is designed to yield during a serious frontal impact in order to help reduce injury to the driver's lower limbs.

For 2007, Subaru Rally Team ÚSA is running two Open Class 2007 Impreza WRX STI rally cars. The team's technical partner, Vermont SportsCar, first begins with stock 2007 STI cars straight off the showroom floor. Each car's interior is then stripped to shed unnecessary weight and a multi-point rollcage, manufactured from T45 steel, is welded in place.

A competition fuel cell, which keeps fuel contained in a flexible Kevlar bag tank, serves as a vital safety function considering the high speed impacts that a rally car may face. Absolute safety is also the goal with the use of Recaro SPG Pro-Racer (w/ HANS – Head and Neck Support device) competition seats. Other interior additions include an anti-glare coated dashboard, carbon door panels, a Coralba C-Giant Rally Odometer, and an onboard Fire System.

The dampers are swapped out for heavy-duty rally dampers made by suspension specialists Öhlins. The rally dampers are fully adjustable and are built to take the abuse that gravel rallying dishes out.

2007 Subaru ImprezaA 5-speed, close ratio dog-engagement gearbox is used, which allows Pastrana and Block to shift without using the clutch. The DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) is used in a similar way to the stock STI, but the team installs a competition differential ECÚ that allows more precise tuning of the torque delivery between all four wheels. This gives the team more adjustability of the handling characteristics of the differential based on road conditions, which in rallying can range from soft gravel to wet tarmac.

The exterior of the car remains close to stock, with the simple addition of mud flaps and a ¼-inch aluminum skid plate. A roof-mounted air scoop is installed to aid in cooling the drivers, as the A/C unit is removed to save weight. The most noticeable exterior change comes at night when the team fits auxiliary HID rally lights produced by PIAA. The lights reside in a carbon fiber ‘lamp pod' that is affixed to the front hood.
