1979 Prophet MKI news, pictures, and information

The Prophet CanAm racer was based on the 1973 Formula 5000 Lola T330 design. It was raced during the 1978 and 1979 season accounting for two wins. The main sponsor was Ampex Cassettes. Drivers in this vehicle include racing greats such as Bobby Rahal and Rick Bell. Rahal was able to finish 3rd at Brainerd, 2nd at Trois-Rivieres, 2nd at Riverside and 1st place at Laguna Seca in a Prophet during the 1979 season. He returned again in 1980 for CanAm competition in the Prophet Chevrolet. His best finish this year was a third place finish at Golden State, Trois-Rivieres and Road Atlanta.

The Prophet team was formed by David Prophet. He was born in Hong Kong and was raised in the midlands. His first racing experience came at the age of 23 in a Formula Junior car. His Kieft Formula car was later replaced by a Brabham BT6 Formula Junior car. The car was later converted to Formula 3 specifications and raced in British events. During the same time he raced a Lotus 32 in Formula 2 competition. The Lotus 32 was later replaced with a Brabham BT10.

He had a well established business located in Kings Norton that specialized in the sale of exotic cars. The business did well which allowed Prophet to continue his racing expeditions.

In 1967 he was racing a Ferrari 250LM. This was later replaced with a Ford GT40 which he used in competition in South Africa and Britain. In 1970 he was racing a Lola T70 and a McLaren M6A and competing in the popular CanAm series.

In Formula 5000 competition, he raced with a McLaren 10B.

David Prophet's life came to an end in 1981 when he crashed his personal helicopter while taking off at Silverstone after watching the International Trophy Formula 2 race.
