For the 2000 Formula One season, BAR (British American Racing) entered their 002 which had been designed by Malcolm Oastler. The team was fairly new to the sport, with their first BAR vehicle appearing in 1999. They ended that season in last place. Jacques Villeneuve had joined the team in 1999 and brought with him a World Championship victory which he obtained in 1997. He was joined by Brazilian Ricardo Zonta who was in his second year driving for the team.
In 1999 the team failed to score a point. Now in their third year, and powered by a Honda RA000E engine, were hopeful on providing podium finishes for the team. This was the inaugural year for the Honda engine and began a relationship that would last for several years before Honda bought the BAR team in 2006.
Villeneuve scored seven points in the Bar/Honda 002 while Zonta earned three. The team finished in fifth place in the Constructors' Championship with a total of 20 points.
