1938 Alfa Romeo Volpi Monoposto news, pictures, and information

Racer

In the late 1930s and 40s, Alfa Romeos regularly dueled with Bugattis, Delahayes, Jaguars, Auto Union and Mercedes for automobile racing supremacy. The Volpi Special shown was driven by the legendary race car driver Juan Manual Fangio in the Formula National in Argentina, just after World War II.

Constructed in Argentina in late 1930s by renowned chassis constructor Conrado Volpi using original Alfa components, this car was raced in various formulas, including Libre, National, and Limitada, by several drivers, including Juan Manuel Fangio in the late 1940s and by his friend Alberto Crespo. Crespo won the 1950 National Championship in Fuerza Limitada, and continued to campaign the car until the late 1950s. After the car was retired, it went on display at the Fundacion Museo del Automovilismo Juan Manuel Fangio in Balcarce, Argentina, at the direct request of Fangio. Years later, it was sold to an American collector, and following a full restoration by D.I. George Coachworks, it has made a successful return to vintage racing.
