Racer

Max and Elmer Reichenbach of South Komensky Avenue in Chicago built the 'KB Special' in their shop for use in Midget racing competition. The Reichenbach brothers had built a reputation for building competitive machines and stylish road-going vehicles.

This is example is powered by a Ford V8-60 engine with improvements courtesy of the Reichenbach brothers. It has a dual-carbuertor intake manifold and two Stromberg '81' carburetors. There are special finned cylinder heads special water pumps, and a high-performance magneto. There is no starter, and must be pushed to start. The car sits on a 72-inch wheelbase and has 12-inch magnesium rims. Little is known of the vehicles racing history, though its roll bar has stickers from races beginning in 1959.

This car was offered for sale at the 2006 Bonhams & Butterfields auction held at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California where it was estimated to sell between $25,000 - $40,000. Since its racing accomplishments are unknown, it failed to generate the interest as other cars in its league. The car did find a new owner, though the bidding fell short of the estimated value. The high bid was $17,550.
Midget

Midget Racing began in California, in June of 1933 and before long, the idea had spread across the country. The tracks were only 1/4 mile in length and were mostly dirt. The cars that raced these tracks were small racers with four-cylinder engines and many being built in back-yards and garages. They had a high power-to-weight ratio and in modern times, the cars can top 300 horsepower. The cars race in tight, wheel-to-wheel competition which provides much enjoyment for the spectators and the participants.

Races are usually range from just a few miles to 25 miles.
