1935 Dodge Model DU news, pictures, and information

R/S Coupe

Dodge is a brand name of automobiles and light to heavy-duty trucks. From 1914 to 1927, the company was named the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. The Chrysler Corporation acquired the Dodge Company in 1928. In 1998, Dodge, along with all other Chrysler subsidiaries merged with Daimler-Benz.

In 1935, Dodge introduced the new DU valve six-cylinder engine with revised coachwork styling and 116-inch wheelbase.

The owner has had this automobile for over 20 years and the owner has restored this automobile himself, with the work being completed in 1986. There were 950 of these autos made wtih selling price of $1,770.00. This car won 2nd place at Ault Park in Cincinnati, Ohio and won Best Production Car of Show.

'New Value Six' - When the two Dodge brothers, John and Horace, decided to announce the manufacture of a new car bearing their own name after having spent many years supplying Ford with engines, even they must have been surprised at the response. More than 22,000 applications for dealer contracts swamped their offices in Hamtramck, MI before anyone knew what kind of car would be built or what price it would be. The first Dodge automobile was produced on November 14, 1914. The 1935 DU features a 217.8 cubic-inch Straight-6 that developed 87 horsepower. It had a new innovation of a concealed radiator cap. The base price model was $770. Convertible coupe production was only 950 units.
The Dodge Model DU was termed as its 'New Value' line, introduced in 1935. The DU brought with it new styling and many new visual characteristics. The cars had a lower roofline, lower floor, narrower radiator grille, and parking lamps mounted on the front fender aprons. Hydraulic brakes, Autolite ignition, ventilated clutch, automatic choke, leaf spring front suspension, concealed radiator cap, easy steering, and a crank-open windshield were offered as Stoddard equipment.

The weight distribution was improved and the interior compartment expanded by having the engine moved eight-inches forward in the engine bay. Under the bonnet was a six-cylinder engine that displaced nearly 218 cubic-inches and produced over 85 horsepower. The engine was mated to a three-speed selective sliding gearbox with a single plate dry disc clutch. A vacuum clutch and overdrive were offered as optional equipment.

The DU came in a variety of bodystyles, all resting on either a 116-inch or 128-inch wheelbase. The most popular option was the four-door sedan which saw production reach 74,203. Total production for the series was 158,999. The price of the vehicles were very competitive with other makes and models available; the price ranged from $645 for the Business Coupe to $995 for the long wheelbase, four-door Caravan Sedan.
