The Lola T97/20 chassis was designed for the Indy Lights Competition series. It features an all-carbon monocoque that was longer and larger than prior Indy Lights chassis which improved protection for the driver's legs and feet.
The cost of a rolling chassis was around $145,000, which did not include an engine. The production based V6 engines were used since the Indy Lights series debut in 1986. The units were derived from road-going GM motors. Each unit was sealed to prevent modifications and produced 425 horsepower. The cost of leasing the engine was $46,000 for the calendar year. An engine rebuild cost an additional $8,000. Each engine was warranted by the American Racing Series for 1,000 miles or three race weekends, whichever was less. The engine work was performed by drag racing legend George ('Ohio') Montgomery at George's Speed Shop in Dayton, Ohio.
A Hewland five-speed gearbox was used and top speed was in the neighborhood of 190 mph.
