The Lola T286 was a development of the T280. It had a monocoque chassis and was powered by a Cosworth/Ford 3.5-liter V8 engine. On example utilized a turbocharged 2.1-liter Cosworth engine. The engine was mated to a Hewland five-speed transaxle.
There were original three examples of the Lola T286 constructed in 1977, but an order by Alain de Cadenet meant a fourth was to be built. The car was never delivered to its purchaser, as FIA rule changes made the car obsolete for racing at Le Mans. The car remained unassembled at the Lola Factory until 1984 when it became the property of Ottford Paper Group Racing Team. Jim Wallace drove the car to some success in the Thundersports Events. The following year it was driven by Mike Wilds to a British Grand Prix victory. From 1986 through 1996 the car lay dormant, until it was given proper tuning and entered in the 1998 Thundersports Cup at Daytona. Walt Bohren navigated the car to a very impressive victory, outpacing the rest of the field.
