The Mazda RX-3 was produced from 1971 through 1978 in coupe, station wagon, and sedan configuration. In the Japanese market, the vehicle was named the Mazda Savanna. It was sold in the US from 1972 through 1978 and was a very popular vehicle. It had a wheelbase that measured 2286 mm and a length of 4064mm. Under the bonnet lurked an engine capable of producing 110 horsepower and could carry the car from zero-to-sixty in 10.8 seconds. The Japan and Australia market was given the 10A engine, Mazda's first production Wankel Rotary engine. The engine was a two-rotor design that displaced a total of 982cc, meaning each rotor displaced 491cc. The rotors were constructed from cast-iron, the shafts of chrome-molybdenum steel, and the rotor housing of sand-cast aluminum plated with chrome. The US and other markets were given the larger 12A engine, which was basically a 'bored-out' version of the 10A. The diameter of the rotors were identical, but the depth had been increased by 10mm. Total displacement was 1146cc (each rotor displacing 573cc). Production of the 12A engine lasted for 15 years, beginning in 1970. It was the first engine built outside of western Europe or the US to finish the grueling 24 Hours of LeMans.
