The Buick Reatta was produced from 1988 through 1991; it was a hand-made luxury sports car in similar fashion to the Cadillac Allante. When first introduced, it was offered as a hardtop coupe; by 1990 a convertible version was added. Under the bonnet was a 3800 V6 engine which displaced 3.8-liters and was capable of producing around 170 horsepower. Disc brakes could be found on all four corners and the suspension was fully independent. Top speed was limited electronically to just 125.

The Reatta was a well equipped car, outfitted with luxury items such as touch screen computer interface called the 'Electronic Control Center' or ECC. This screen controlled the climate control functions, diagnostics to sensors and electronic systems, and the radio. Other options included overspeed alarm, trip computer, tire gauge, flashlight, and leather bound book containing the owner's manual.

In 1990, a drivers side airbag was added. Keyless entry appeared in 1989. In 1991, the engine and transmission received attention and the 'L27' 3800 and 4T60-E replaced the LN3 and Hydraulic 4T60.

Buick anticipated selling 20,000 of these flagship vehicles but sales were disappointing. 4,708 examples were produced the first year; 7009 examples were sold the second year. 1990 was the cars highest year of sales, with 8,515 examples produced. 2132 were convertibles and 6,383 were coupes. The final year of production saw only 1,519 examples produced with 305 units being convertible. Total production reached just 21,751 units.
