The The Singer Gazelle was introduced in 1956 and based strongly on the Hillman Minx. This was due to Singer becoming part of the Rootes group. It was offered in a variety of bodystyles including saloon, convertible and estate bodies. They were elegantly appointed and well equipped. The cars were powered by a 1497cc overhead cam four-cylinder engine that could carry the cars to nearly 80 mph. In 1957 the Series II Gazelle was introduced bringing with it a new overdrive option on the engine. A larger fuel tank was added to eleviate complaints about distances between fill-ups.
Production of the Gazelle continued until 1967. In total, there were over 100,000 examples produced.
