1931 Chrysler Series 70

Chrysler vehicles were primarily powered by six-cylinder engines through 1930. A four-cylinder model (a rebadged Maxwell) arrived in 1926 and was offered through 1928, and the company's first eight-cylinder model was the Series CD and Imperial Series CG of 1931. The eight-cylinder engine had a cast-iron block, solid valve lifters, a Stromberg carburetor, a 5.2:1 compression ratio, 240.33 cubic-inch displacements, and developed 80 horsepower. Modifications were made during the production year resulting in an increase in power to 88 bhp. The 384.84 CID inline-8 powering the Series CG was rated at 125 bhp. The Deluxe CD Series had a 282.1 CID inline-8 with 100 horsepower.

When Chrysler introduced its six-cylinder Model B-70 in 1924, it came with a non-traditional 4.7:1 compression ratio, as most engines used 4.0:1 compression. This made the Chrysler the first American medium-priced car with a high-compression engine. It displaced 201.5 cubic inches, had aluminum pistons, and developed 68 horsepower at 3,200 RPM. It came standard with four-wheel hydraulic brakes, full-pressure lubrication, and a tubular front axle which were features not typically found on a volume production vehicle of the era. Fortune magazine described the car as, 'a period when desires had supplanted needs ... an era when a car which could give for $1,500 the 'thrills' of a car of $5,000 was precisely what the people who could buy it would most wish to buy.'

Chrysler's 1931 six-cylinder models included the Series CJ, the Series 66, and the Series 70. All three were carry-over models from the previous year, as the company focused its engineering expertise on preparing the new eight-cylinder models. The 195.6 CID six in the CJ and Series 66 used a 5.2:1 compression ratio, four main bearings, solid valve lifters, and produced 68 horsepower. The Series 70 displaced 268.4 cubic inches, used a downdraft carburetor, and produced 93 horsepower at 3,200 RPM. The Series 66 rested on a 112.75-inch wheelbase platform and the Series 70 measured 116.5 inches.

The 1931 Chrysler Series 70 wore a new, narrow, flat, vee-type radiator and came equipped with a four-speed 'multi-range' transmission, mechanical fuel pump, 'paraflex' springs, a Delco Remy ignition, and hydraulic brakes. Body styles included a Royal coupe priced at $1,295, a business coupe, a Royal sedan, and brougham at $1,245, a roadster at $1,345, and a phaeton at $1,295. The convertible coupe was the most expensive at $1,545.

Chrysler would continue to offer six- and eight-cylinder models through 1942.
