Motorette

Pierce produced its first automobile in 1901. Prior products were Bird Cages, bicycles and motor cycles.

This particular 1904 participated in the One Hundred Anniversary of the Pierce Motor Car company of Buffalo, NY. It was the oldest Pierce exhibited that ran.

In 1904 a steering wheel was included. Previously, the car was steered with a tiller.

The car was found by Fred Haller abandoned in boxes in Pennsylvania. The current owner put the car together including the restoration process.

George N. Pierce produced his first Pierce automobile in 1901. It was called the Motorette and was powered by a de Dion engine that produced 2.5 horsepower. This was adequate considering the vehicles size and the poor conditions of the road at the time. Pierce continued to use de Dion engines until 1904 when they introduced their single-cylinder engine. The engine was a Pierce design and the engine was air-cooled and produced around 8 horsepower. The cost to own a base model Stanhope was around $1200. A Stanhope with a top cost around $1300. Stanhope's were reliable vehicles having set a Class Victory in October of 1903 in a New York to Pittsburgh test run.

The Stanhope had a unique folding front seat that added addition room for two extra passengers, bringing the total to four. The Stanhope had two speeds, forward and reverse.
