The Alfa Romeo 33 was produced from 1983 through 1994. The vehicle was available in five-doors or as an estate wagon which, in 1987, was renamed to SportWagon. Pininfarina had been tasked with styling the 33. The vehicle was similar to its predecessor, the Alfasud, and used similar chassis and mechanics.
When introduced, the engine was identical to the one used in the Alfasud. The 1351 cc was capable of producing nearly 80 horsepower in single-carburetor form. With dual carburetors, the horsepower increased to 86 horsepower. A 1490 cc engine produced 85 horsepower in single carburetor form while the dual carburetors increased the output to 95 horsepower.
An all-wheel drive system borrowed from Subaru was available as optional equipment on the estate body-style.
During its eleven year production lifespan, the vehicle was restyled twice. In 1987 a 1.7 liter engine became available and the 4WD system was no longer offered. In 1990 the 33 went through an extensive restyling which brought its appearance more in-line with the Alfa Romeo 'look' inspired by the 164. During this time, the interior was also revised. An intelligent four-wheel drive system was again offered. Most of the power was sent to the front wheels but when necessary, over 60% of the power could be transferred to the rear wheels.
