1907 Cadillac Model K news, pictures, and information

Tulip Roadster
Chassis Num: 24077

Sold for $49,500 at 2007 RM Auctions.
Cadillac's model line-up for 1907 included four series consisting of two single-cylinder models and two four-cylinder models. Even though the more powerful four-cylinder units were available, many customers still preferred the single-cylinder units. 1906 and 1907 were the most popular years for the 1-cylinder engines. The Model K was available only in one bodystyle for 1907, and it was a two-seater runabout known as the 'Tulip' roadster and had a base price of $800. This was an increase in price by $50 over the 1906 model. The roadster had optional equipment including three different tops and lamps.

There were aesthetic differences between the 1906 and 1907 Cadillac Model K. The 1907 versions had altered front fenders, an additional inside skirt, and a flattened nose. Mechanically, they were nearly identical as well, with a few differences between them. The oiler drive changed from cam to pulley, an engine/transmission drip pan was added, and the muffler outlet was now at the front instead of the side.

This 1907 Cadillac Model K Tulip Roadster was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars sale at Hershey, PA presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $50,000-$70,000 and offered without reserve. A high bid of $49,500 including buyer's premium nearly reached the low-end of the estimated value. The lot was sold and passed to new ownership, after spending a quarter-of-a-century in a private museum. Prior to becoming a static display, the car was used frequently on tours.

This is a very original car, featuring its original body, seat, hood, dash and radiator. There are red wooden wheels, black tufted leather upholstery, brass headlamps, side lamps, and a period horn. It has its correct single-cylinder Cadillac motor, two-speed forward plus reverse, planetary transmission, and mechanical oiler.

The Cadillac Model K was powered by a horizontal single-cylinder engine that displaced 98.2 cubic-inches and offered 10 horsepower. A four-cylinder model had been introduced in 1905, but their single-cylinder cars remained very popular, and would continue in production through 1908. That was the same year that three Model K Cadillacs triumphed in the Dewar competition in England, being disassembled, their parts scrambled and reassembled, and then easily started. This was a demonstration and testament to the precision manufacturing by Henry Leland. The Cadillac was later given the slogan 'The Standard of the World.'

Since under-seat engines were becoming out-dated, Cadillac disguised the fact by mounting a dummy hood over the front axle on 1905 models, with a vertical radiator at the front. In 1906, they introduced new single-cylinder models K and M, which differed only in wheelbase. The Model M was two inches longer. The following year, the front fender contour was flattened and a factory-installed Victoria top became available.

Due to the shape of the seat the Light Runabout was given the nickname 'Tulip.' This example has an older restoration. The coachwork is original and remains in excellent condition, with good paint and correct, good condition brass.

In 2010, this Light Runabout was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey auction presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $35,000 - $45,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $66,000 including buyer's premium.

The four-cylinder Model D was introduced in 1905 which brought significant improvements in power and performance to the Cadillac line of vehicles. Regardless, the single-cylinder models remained in production, and popularity, through 1908. The single-cylinder engines were durable and adequate, proven by their popularity and in endurance runs. Three Model K Cadillac's competed in the Dewar competition in England in 1908 and emerged victorious. At the close of the endurance run, all three cars were disassembled and their parts scrambled. The cars were then re-assembled from the mix-matched parts and easily started. This final demonstration was to reinforce Leland's precision manufacture and to the slogan 'The Standard of the World.'

A design change was added in 1905, following the popular configuration of the time. The front was given a dummy hood over the front axle while the engine remained under the seats. In the front was a vertical radiator on the Models C, E, and F. These were replaced for 1906 by Models K and M. Both of the K and M were identical except for the Model M having a wheelbase two inches longer. Production of the K and M continued into 1907. In 1907 the Model S and T were introduced, with the T remaining in production until the end of 1908.
