1942 Oldsmobile B-44 Special Series 68 news, pictures, specifications, and information
Chassis Num: 6812112
|Sold for $14,300 at 2007 RM Auctions.|
The Series Special Oldsmobile in 1942 had a unusual 'double-duty bumper.' What appeared to be a floating grille bar was actually part of the bumper.
This particular vehicle is a Series 68, meaning it has the eight-cylinder engine. The series 66 was fitted with the six-cylinder engine. The eight-cylinder L-head engine displaces 257 cubic-inches and produces 110 horsepower. There is a Hydra-matic four-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. This car has its share of dents, dings, scratches, and rust. The floor and body appear to be solid and straight. The power convertible top has reasonably good canvas material. The odometer shows 41,767 miles and it was last inspected in 1965 in Pennsylvania.
There were 848 examples produced in 1942 and was Oldsmobile's second most exclusive vehicle for that model year. Only the 98 series ragtop had fewer sales. This 1942 Oldsmobile B-44 Special Series 68 Convertible Coupe was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars sale at Hershey, PA presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $10,000 - $15,000 and offered without reserve. The lot was sold for $14,300 including buyer's premium.

The Oldsmobile Series 60 was introduced in the late 1930s and remained in production until 1948 when the six-cylinder engine was given a larger displacement, to 257 cubic-inches. The Series 60 was Oldsmobile's entry level vehicle, offered in two flavors, the 66 and the 68. The Model 66's were powered by a six-cylinder engine that displaced 238 cubic-inches; the 68 had an eight-cylinder engine. There were a variety of bodystyles included for both the 66 and 68, including the two-door club coupe, four-door bustle back, 9-passenger woody station wagon, convertible, and two-door Fleeline. All, except the convertible and station wagons, were available in either Standard or Deluxe trim. All Series 60s were offered with a standard three-speed column shift manual gearbox. A four-speed Hydramatic automotive unit was available at an additional cost. The standard tires measured 6.00x16.
