2008 Jeep® Wrangler Still the 21st Century Off-road Benchmark – Right From the Factory
Built on the successful, original Jeep® formula of body-on-frame chassis, solid front and rear axles, removable doors, fold-down windshield and the most capable drivetrains on the planet, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler remains without peer as a vehicle that can blaze its own trail – on a mountain or to the mall.
Offered in three models – Wrangler X, Sahara and Rubicon® – the 2008 Jeep Wrangler is tough, versatile and simple, achieving best-in-class off-road capability while delivering a true open-air driving experience. Jeep Wrangler does not wander from the brand's coveted core values of freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity.
While legendary for its off-road prowess, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler doesn't demand sacrifices in the name of capability, providing safety and convenience features, interior space and comfort, refinement, power and open-air fun.
The 2008 Jeep Wrangler lives up to its more than 65 years of heritage and accomplishment by offering benchmark off-road capability, versatility, power, on-road refinement, comfort and space.
Design
Jeep Wrangler has a devoted following that demands adherence to traditional Jeep styling cues no matter what model year. The 2008 Jeep Wrangler does not disappoint. While staying true to its design roots, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler's appearance holds true to tradition yet is contemporary, with clean, crisp lines and improved fit and finish.
Wrangler's signature features all remain hallmarks for 2008, including classic round headlamps, a seven-slot grille, trapezoid wheel flares, exposed hinges, a fold-down windshield, sport bar, removable tops and doors, available full-framed or half doors, and hard and soft tops.
Introduced in 2007, the new Jeep Wrangler is 5.5 inches wider than the previous-generation Wrangler, assuming a more square-shouldered, brawnier appearance. The sheet metal combines angular elements with rounded corners to impart a robust appearance with subtle refinement.
Engineering
Capability has always been a watchword of the Jeep Wrangler, starting with the basics. While improving its legendary 4x4 Jeep capability, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler benefits from a frame that is 100 percent stiffer than its predecessor, and a body structure 50 percent stiffer. The 2008 Jeep Wrangler's wheelbase is 2 inches longer, and its track is 3.5 inches wider.
Suspension is a refined five-link coil setup with tuned shock absorbers. This setup works with Dana 30 front and next-generation heavy duty Dana 44 rear axles. The 2008 Wrangler Rubicon model uses heavy-duty front and rear Dana 44 axles.
Jeep Wrangler also offers an electronic-disconnecting front stabilizer bar, called the Active Sway Bar System, which delivers additional wheel travel for challenging terrain. It is standard on the 2008 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and available on X and Sahara models.
With high ground clearance combined with short front and rear overhangs, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler is able to conquer incredibly challenging off-road obstacles, especially severe inclines. Off-road aficionados recognize the key numbers: for the Rubicon model, an approach angle of 44.3 degrees, breakover angle of 25.4 degrees and departure angle of 40.4 degrees. Underbody protection is provided by three skid plates – protecting the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan.
The powerplant for all 2008 Jeep Wranglers is a 3.8-liter V-6 engine producing 202 horsepower (151 kW) and 237 lb.-ft. (321 N•m) of torque, backed by a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an available four-speed automatic transmission.
2008 Jeep Wrangler X and Sahara models are equipped with the second-generation Command-Trac® NV241 part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. A Trac-Lok® limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during slippery, low-traction situations, such as driving over sand, gravel, snow or ice.
The 2008 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model is equipped with an Off-Road Rock-Trac® NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio, as well as electric front- and rear-axle lockers, an electronic sway-bar disconnect and 32-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires.
On-road ride in the 2008 Jeep Wrangler lineup is balanced, with minimal body lean when cornering and braking. Suspension geometry provides precise ride-and-handling characteristics, while lower suspension spring rates provide a softer, more comfortable on-road ride. An Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface, is standard on the 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The ESP system features three modes – 'full on,' 'full off' and 'partial on.'
The 2008 Jeep Wrangler's exterior is notable not only for its styling, but also for its open-air options. An easy-folding soft top is standard, while Jeep's Freedom Top™, a three-piece modular hard top, is available. This system features three panels – left and right front-passenger panels and a rear panel – providing more options for open-air driving. Also available is the innovative Sunrider® soft top, which includes a 'sun roof' in addition to the full top-down option.
Interior volume provides a front-seat area with 54.6 cu. ft. of space. Rear seats comfortably accommodate two adults with 48.3 cubic feet of space, and a fold-and-tumble feature allows rear seats to be conveniently stowed for additional storage capacity. Space behind the rear seat provides room for a new lockable, under-floor storage area, which secures small items out of sight in the rear cargo area.

Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited Climbs Highest Volcano on Earth and Sets New Altitude World Record• Two Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited vehicles climbed 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) above sea level to the rim of Ojos del Salado – the highest altitude ever reached by a four-wheeled vehicle
• Accomplishment certified by Guinness World Records™
Seventy years after the first man climbed the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salado in Chile, two Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited vehicles set a new world record by climbing 6,646 meters (21,804 feet) to the volcano's rim. The achievement, certified by Guinness World Records™, is not one that is likely to be easily beaten.
Others tried, but only the 'go anywhere, do anything' Jeep vehicles could make it to the top of the volcano. It is the second highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere (6,892 meters / 22,597 feet), and now dubbed the 'highest parking lot in the world'. Jeep parking only, of course. Over five exhausting days in March, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles carried a team from Extrem Events (Germany), led by Mattias Jeschke, from the base of the inhospitable volcano in the Chilean Andes to the highest point that a four-wheeled vehicle has traveled.
'This was exactly the challenge to separate the new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited from all other 4x4 vehicles. A climb like this in not just off-road, but extreme conditions, is a testament to the performance of the vehicle's powertrain, suspension and overall quality. We are very proud that Wrangler Unlimited was the first vehicle to be able to complete such a rigorous challenge, and believe that it really does set the vehicle apart from its competition,' said George Murphy, Chrysler Group Senior Vice President of Global Marketing.
During the trip, the team endured hurricane-strength winds, temperatures that reached minus 30 degrees Centigrade (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit) and the thin air of such high altitudes, as it maneuvered over malicious glaciers, fissured rock cliffs and volcanic sand. The last stretch of the climb was the most grueling. Both Wrangler Unlimited vehicles had to cross a glacier, parts of which were so smooth that any travel by foot required spiked shoes. At the far end was the glacier field, a fissured ice area strewn with razor sharp snow penitents. It was here that the vehicle's 3.8L V-6 engine and Goodyear's MT/R tires proved their true capability, and made the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited the first vehicle to ever cross the Ojos del Salado glacier.
After reaching the initial goal, to surpass 6,500 meters, just beyond the glacier, the team continued to drive on and pushed forward until there was nowhere left to drive. 'Unbelievable, tremendous, phenomenal,' was the description from team leader, Jeschke, after reaching the plateau at the end of the summit. 'The Wranglers are unbeatable.'
The two Wrangler Unlimited vehicles that completed this challenge were standard equipment Rubicon models. In addition to the standard equipment, both vehicles were fitted with Goodyear MT/R tires, electronic altitude measuring technology and winches.
Featuring a one-of-a-kind, four-door open-air design, the all-new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offers even more comfort, space, versatility and open-air options than the all-new Wrangler. With room for five adult passengers – a Wrangler first – and the most cargo space ever offered in a Wrangler, the Wrangler Unlimited combines class-leading off-road capability with everyday practicality.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience and core values to a broader range of customers who have always wanted a Wrangler, but also needed more space and versatility. Outside North America, two engine options are available, an all-new 2.8-litre common-rail turbo diesel engine as well as a new 3.8-litre V-6 petrol engine. The Wrangler is available in both left- and right-hand drive. With solid axles, removable doors, exposed hinges, a fold-down windscreen and innovative removable and convertible tops, Wrangler retains the brand's coveted core values of freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity.Source - Jeep

70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.
Originally used in the 1920s, Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s – the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth 'package cars' equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of 'Special Parts' for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.
Today, the Chrysler LLC Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler engineering standards.Source - Jeep
