It is believed that 4 cars were constructed by Ford 'Works.' Cosworth was engaged to design and build
a special 4 cam, fuel-injected 24-balve engine for the RS 3100 V6 motor. Known as the 'GAA,' it produced 455 hp with a 3.4 liter capacity. The oil crisis had a major effect on the 1974 racing season. Ford's main opponent was BMW with their ultra-competitive CSL's. The RS 3100 Cologne Capris were acclaimed as Europe's fastest touring cars of the time.
The RS3100 was the first car to use external side-mounted radiators. Magnesium was used extensively, i.e. wheels, transmission housing, specially engineered front struts, etc. The bonnet (hood), boot (trunk), doors and wheel arches are fiberglass and lightweight perspex glass was used. Much effort went into aero work, i.e. the front and rear spoilers and rocker panel extensions (to flatten bottom of car). Of special note is the radiator-or lack of- in the engine compartment (aero work). It was moved to the sides.
The RS 3100 is chassis # GAECNA 19997 and was driven by Jochen Mass and Toni Hezemans to many international wins for the Ford 'Works' Team. After the 1974/1975 season, the car was sold to the Rentokill-Holland sponsor's team for the Dutch International Championship in 1975 and 1976 and then was sold to a British enthusiast and then to Mr. Les Blackburn (who ran ex-works RS 2600s) and then to Mr. Tom Walkinshaw, former TWR and Arrows Formula I team owner.
